creek flows to the North and empties into
the Clear Kork where the latter crosses
the western boundary line of the countv.
Still ftirllier North. H Ish ctvek takes Its
origin high up on the elevated lands,
starts Its thread like course North of West,
growing larger and forcing its way down
th'Ougli the mountains and Anally shares
the fitte of the other tributaries and adds
its limpid waters to those of the Clear
Fo^k. These beautiful streams nffonl a
line variety of excellent flsh. Many line
springs of excellent water are found In all
parts of the c unty. atul wells affording
an abundance of superior water mm he
had at a distance of from 12 to 4# feet be-
low the surface. Hence there is perhaps
no healthier locality on the glow, than
this section of country, the air is dry.
Kmc and bracing and inconsequence very
ttle sickness ofiimv kind prevail*.-
We have many excellent farms in the
county. 1 ropS last season were verv
good, yet were not sufficient for home
demand in as much as the settlers were
principally stock men, consequently the
producers have had a profltabie market at
home, and a comfortable assurance
that the famous fertile valleys of our
streams and prairie uplands will ever re-
ward the industrious fanner.
All tiie streams are skirted with a grow-
th consisting of Pecan, Cottonwood.
Iluckberry. I.IVe Oak, etc.. Mesqtlit is a
common growth of the prairie and is an
excellent Arewood. Tliese timbers are
used for fencing by many, yet a large ma-
jority of the settlers have substantial
stone fences, of which material there is u
great abtinduiice not only for fencing but
for bujtdlng purposes also, the quality of
which, masons of experience say, is not
excelled by any In th*; State.
The wild native grasses of this county
are a rich storehouse of wealth, apd are to
tlie settlers, both bam and crib. The fa-
mous mexqut grns" Is the most abum|i|nt as
it is the most valuable. It will enable an ani-
mal to perform almost if not quite as pinch
work as he wonld if fed on corn or oats.
Unlike tlie grasses of most, countries. It
does not die and become worthless In the
winter, but it Is'cured into a good and
nutritious hay by the winds and heat of
slimmer and aiititinn. as it stands on the
gronnd and is almost as good for Btock in
tills state as when green. A winter gran*,
known as ''wild rye,"' grows along the
margin of the streams anil furnishes green
pastures during the cady spring. A tall
summer grats growing mostly In the
creek and river .valleys, when cut and
cured, makes a Hue liny. We have a I o
the Gratnugrass.so highly priwd in Color-
ado. and on the 1'aciAc slo|M>.
Tlds is par excellent the favored citin-
try for the stock-raisers. The earth's sur-
face is covered with rich provender of
nature's planting, while water is ahiind-
ailtimd stock healthy. Sheep, Cattle,
and Horses keep fat nil the year round
without feeding.and yield a handsome re-
turn for the little care needed in seeing al-
ter them. Farmers have frequently made
erops without any other food fur their
work animals eXW-pt sueli as they might
gather on the range at night.
Cattle raising is the great interest jnd
revenue of the country, and we are hnppy
to say stock-men are working more har-
moneotts iiid systematical than ever In-fore.
Ma' y of theni lire giving eon-ldcrablc at-
tention to improving their stock, by I he
introduction of thorough bred Short
Horns and Hereford.-', mid we venture lo
say that ere long the old Texas long horn-
ed'cattle will graze our prairies no nunc.
