National Aid to Public School*.
Washington, March 8.—Rev. J. L.
M. Curry, of Richmond, Va., General
Agent of the Peabody educational
funds, addressed the house committee
on education and labor today on the
question of national aid to the public
schools on a basis of illiteracy. He-
laid down two postulates. First, that

free republican representative institu-

Tkc Trial of John T. Crisp Begun.
Sui.PMUit SruiKOs, March 9. —The
case of John T. Crisp, of Missouri, f r
the murder of Felix Patrick some
years since, was called in our District
court on the morning of the Gth, the
Stale lieing r. p escnted by District
Attorney Ifeirdeii. L. I). King, Hen-
derson ix S eward, and E. B. Perkins:
the defense by Hunter, Putman.
Crawford, and Col. Cockrell, of Slier
man. Both Slate and defendant an
nouneed ready for IrW. and the jnr\
was impaneled the first day. The State
has rested for fhe present, and the wit
nesses to- the defense are now being
examined. '1 here is considerable in-
terest being manifested in the case by
the friends ami relatives both of Pat-
rick and Crisp, liecause of the promi
nence of the relatives of the deceased
in this county, and the prominent
part taken in Missouri politics by
Crisp, though the friends and rela
tires of the deceased (Patrick) ask and
want nothing but a fair trial of the
prisoner by a jury of the country.
Your reporter has been absent several
days in Northwest Texas, and met
sevtiral gentlemen from Missouri, and
they air manifest much interest in the
matter, and say the interest in Mis-
souri, and more especially in Colonel
Crisp's congressional district, was at
fever height _
Tkc BumII Investigation.
Houston Post.
Austin, March 9.—Captain Ned
Huppertz, Colonel Russell's special
deputy, informed a Post reporter today
that the detective bad not, up to that
made any investigation of the
'office. He denies, as entirely false, the
report that $37,000, sent down t* con
duct the court at Austin and San An
tonio, disappeared within forty-eight
hours. He savs that $3700 were sent
down to defray court expenses at
Brownsville, bui, thai, court not being
held there, the amount was expended
at the laic Austin term. Captain Hup-
ped! says that every juror and every
witness has liccn paid to date; that tin-
marshal, instead of being a defaulter,
has flo.000 accounts ready to present
|o the department ami he (Mr. Hii|>-

the office. The investigation is c«n

A Big Swindle.
The people are constantly being in-
veigled into taking a substitute or be-
ing deceived into buying a fraud, for
the reason that dealers can buy the
counterfeits at per dozen, or 42
cents per bottle, and sell it to the con-
sumers at $1—making an enormous
profit, which is the only object In try-
ing to sell a preparation in imitation
of, or substitute for, Simmons Liver
Regulator. Nothing is known about
the imitations—they are made by ail-
venturers, knowing nothing of medi-
cines or drugs. Buy only the genuine,
it being recommended by the greatest
and most reliable people. Take only
that which is known to be good, made
