Arid over all with musie's spell
Cheerily dihn«d| 4hf convent bell,
• Sweet coii'j^t bell!
Filling tlte air yitli a dreamy spell.
*lt was a thousand years ago,
And the valley smiled in e>len plow,
When the Blaster's hand, hy the grand 0,tl tinies
Fashioned the bell, that sang the chimes,
And then ahoi;, in the tower it swung;
And haiie4 the morn, with a tunetul tongue,
'Twas long ago, when the New World lay,
In the doxky future, tar away,
Ere yet' the dnring Genooae ■
Had turned his prow, o'er the tar off seas,
Or the bold Grusadw sought the shrine
Of Christian faith in Palestine, *
]jut soft and sweet as the tones that tell
Of unknown realms, rang', out the bell,
The convent betl!
Soft and sweet as music's swell.
But the stormy centuries onward rolled
To bid the new bright realms out'old,
And they bore the bell, o'er the ocean's breast
To the smiling shores of the golden West,
Where the seeds of empire, grand and vast,
Were sown from sen to sea, broad exst,
For a sturdy band ilie ocean braved.
And homes were reared, wlioi'o the wild woods
waved;
What though the tide of battle swept
•O'er the sail our fathers Won and kept
The starry folds of o'ir flay unfurled
Like a robe of peace, o'er the bright New World.
And over all serene and clear,
lake a ptopliet voice on the listening ear,
The 'ones of the bell, like music fell
In victory's peal or a funeral kiieil ;
Sweet convent bell!
Charming the air like music's swell.
A thousand years have wandered away,
And the bel rings cheerily out to-day,
Over the shore and down the stream:
Like'the mystic melody hmintinjr .« dream,
Or a silver voice from another sphere,
Bringing the far oft centuries near:
Oh ! strange sweet voice from another clime
Floating out from the shadows of time,

And south .imt thrilled to the sound to-day

A hutidrcil ytnirs since the very air of the
spot where we now stand vibrated v it h tlie
chime "ot* the el.urcli belts, and the roll of the
stately organ, or waited tn devou'. multitudes
the savour o hu!y incense. Hi'.i'e were cou-
gregattd the sofiiers, morehants^ artisans of
old France; on these high walls paced the
solemn sentry; in these streets the nun stoic
past in her n o est ho d; oi the romantic dam-
sel pressed her check to the latticed windows
as the young oflicer rode by. and martial mu-ic
tilled ;he avenues with its inspiring strains;
in yonder bay floated the great war ship? of
LotiiS; and around the shores of this liarboi
could be count'(1 battery after battery, with
scores ol' guns bristling from the embras-
ure.-.. *
The building ol' this stronghold was the la-
bor of twenty five years. The stone walls
rose to the hight of thirty six feet. In those
broken Wrches, studded with stalabtites, these i
easements or vaults of the citadel, \ou nil; j
see some evidence oi" its further strength. You i
will know t!ic citadel by them, and by the
greater hei^at of tli? mounds which mark the
walls that' once encompassed it. .Within thr«e
stood the smaller militjiry chapel. Think of
looking down from this point upon! those broad
ayenues, busy with life a hutjdfed yesirs
ago! j
Neither roof nor spire remaih now; nor
square, nor street; nor convent, chiltrch, or bar-
' rack 'fhe green turf covers all—even the
foundations of the houses are btir ed. It is a
city without an inhabitant. Dismantled can-
non, with the rust clinging in great flakes;
seattere 1 implements of war; broken weapons,
bay neti, gun looks, shot, shell or grenade, un-
claimed, untouched, corroded and corroding, in
aileuce and desolation, with no signs of life
visible within these once warlike phrapcts, ex-
cept tht peaceful sheep, grazing upon the
very brow of the citadel, are the only relies of
the once powerful Louisburg.
