If- a closed; atid the will of the mighty
mditary r-uier as taken the place of long
established principles and maxims of
law—maxims consecrated by time, and
the labor of men who have long ago
passed t'T the stage of action. These
r nncip'os were wrought out in the gieat
work-shop vrhi-re reason, justice and nierey
.rcct, and in harmony labor to amoliorate
th condition of suffering humanity and
el ate it to the moral scalo of the uni-
verse. .
There wa« a period in cur own history
as a nation, when the labors of <rood men
were directed to the path that, leads to
national prosperity aud national great-
ness,' It was when the people enjoyed
the freedom of American citizens, and
.ht ii the Constitution was obeyed and
respected. It was when equal justice
was measured out to all, and "none was
board to complain.1 It was before the
shrill sound of the bugle was heard in
tho deep valley and 011 the mountain top,
| summoning the troops to the liekl of strife
; where iiieinau met, "and iought, bled,
! and died. But when the sound of the
I great bns3 drum was heard, and the roar
j oi' the deep-mouthed cannon aroused the
wii.: bea.st 1V'>m his bed before his time,
'l "'< !•*.'« 'J. mL good order .ind ennctj.
tutioual liberty were forgotten, as vain
imaginations of the past. He who talked
of the rights of man was regarded-as a
madman, and more dangerous than the
foe man on the field. But the smoke of
battle- is passing away, and the gates of
J anus .so long open, we trust are closed
forever. In the contest, it would seem
that some of the privileges we once cn-
jcyod have passed away. New laws,
tost oaths, oatli3 of amnesty and allegi-
ance are framed at tho pleasure of the
conqueror.
Again, and in conclusion, we advir,e
the people ro Uke the oath-designated in
heading < f this article. We say take
! :t, po that the people may not suffer any
| ouaier loss or calamity than has already
j befallen them. Without complying with
! the order ot the President, 110 one can be
j a ; ualiGcd elector. And the result would
j be, that, the vcice, as well as the great
.literests of the people, would not be rep-
i ii-sf.Mted. At all events, the period is not
'V-r distant ".hen there will be a couven-
i ii n, purporting to represent the sover-
i ei:.-aty of the State.

It will be renit.niberttd that our former House, arranged, the laws in force, and those upon which '
in '60, took h"td of Texas wool and made a mai- I njj|its depend, or which h^ve been tho subject of
ket tor it in I\ew \01k,'so that it competed with judicial decision; so as to enable tiie student, the
bar, and the courts to consult at a glance, and in
Ohio and New York State Wool. As the season
is so far advanced, it will be just as satisfactory to
ship pus to bale their Wool as cotton, lining care-
ful, however, to grade it so that but one style
will be iu the bale.

by the Supremo Court of Texas, or of the United
