instead of provoking war. With
Great Britain withdrawn from their
scale and shifted into that of our two
continents, all Europe combined would
not undertake such a war. For how
■ would they propose to get at either
i enemy without superior fleets ?—
! Nor is the occasion to be slighted
i which this proposition off'era of dec!ar-
1 ing our protest against the atrocious
I violations of the rights of nations, by
the interference of any one in the in-
ternal affairs of another, so flagitious-
: ly begun by Bonaparte, aud now con-
, tinned by tho equally lawless Alli-
| anco calling itself Holy.
(But wc have first to ask ourselves a 1
question. Do we wish to acquire to
our own confederacy any one or more
of the Spanish provinces'? 1 can-
didly confess that I have ever looked
on Cuba as the most interesting aildi- i
tion which could ever be made to our
system of States. Thecontrol which,
with Florida Point, this Island would
give us over the Uulf of Mexico, und ,
the countries aud isthmus bordering
on it, as well us all those whose wa-
ters How into it, would fill up tlie
measure of our political well-being.
Yet, as I am sensible that this can
never be obtained, even with her ovn
consent, but by war; and its inde-
pendence, which is our second inter- i
est, (especially its independence of
England,) can be secured without it,
1 have no hesitation in abandoning
my first wish to future chances, and
accepting its independence, with
peace and the friendship of En gland,
rather than its association at the ex-
pense of war and her enmity.
I could honestly, therefore, join in
the declaration proposed, that, we
ai n not at the acquisition of any of
t icse possessions, that we will not
stand in the way of any mineable ar-
rangement between them and the
mother country; but that we will
oppose, with all our means, the forci-
ble interposition of any other rower,

A Colonist's Uxpcrienco in .llcxii o,
\Vre Hind in thu Constitutionalist of
Augusta, Georgia, a letter addressed
to the Rev. John W. Baker, of that
city, from which we take the follow-
ing description of Cordova and its en-
virons. The writer, who seems to be
regarded as worthy ot all credence, it
will be seen, regards the Juarez party
as nearly extinct in Mexico. The
"Liberal" party in Mexico is now
much like that which Win. Walker
had latterly iu Nicaragua—mostly
composed of llllibustcrs and native fu-
gitives from justice for robberies,
thefts and ordinary murders:
I arrived at Vera Cruz on the Oth
ilist.., and at this place on the 11th.—
So far as 1 have seen, I am perfectly
delighted with this region of country,
and think that it is the most favorable
region I have ever seen. Nature
seems to have exhausted herself in
making here a home for man.
We are here eighty-live miles from
Vera Crux,, and two hundred and
twenty from Mexico, on the great, na-
tional highway and the Imperial Kail-
road, between these two cities. 'I he
plain on which Cordova, is situated is
on the eastern slope of the Cordille-
ras, and is three thousand feet above
the sea, We have here a most de-
lightful and. healthful climate. The
altitude gives us, beneath u tropical
hud, a temperature not so warm as
that of middle (tooigiaat any m um.ii,
and never colder than .your May. All
the tropical fruits ami plants grow in
great profusion, while, bi'iieuth the
