HELD FRIDAY NIfiHT
The annual Junior-Senior Prom
of the Bastrop High School was
held Friday evening. May lfi, in
the Bastrop State Park Refectory.
A May theme was carried out
in the large dining hall with
miniature May Pole.- with paper
streamers centering each of the
Tallies. The head table held an
arrangement of red rog#>s, the
class flower, with a May Pole on
either side.
The Invocation was given by
Thomas Ray Key. Pete Taylor,
president of the Junior Class,
gave a speech of welcome, and
Stanley Smith, senior valedictor-
ian, gave the response. Myra
Beth Griffin and Ruth Garcia
-ang solos Nancy Bordman gave
the class prophecy, and Richard
Reedy read the class will.
The meun consisted of Special-
ty salad, turkey and dressing,
cranberry sauce, parsleyed new-
potatoes, green beans, butter and
rolls, iced tea and specialty ap-
ple pie.
Following the dinner there was
a dance held on the terrace around
a large May Pole. Music was
furnishwi by a five piece swing
hand from Flgin.

Miss Virginia Dare Smith,
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ar-
thur P. Smith of Cedar Creek,
will receive her BA degree from
Baylor University, Waco, tomor-
row (Friday), May 25.
Miss Smith was graduated from
EtafBtrop High School in 11*48,
w hen she was valedictorian of the
class, receiving a college .scholar-
ship. Sht was an active member
of the 4-H Club and won a trip
to National -4-11 Congress in
Washington, D. C.
She is a talented musician and
has been Church and Sunday
School pianist.
She i- a member of Phi Gamma
N'u at Baylor.

SWIM WD PICNIC
Each class unit of the Bastrop
Chapter of Future Homemakers
of America is holding their tra-
ditional school closing swimming
party and picnic.
On Tuesday afternoon the
Homemaking II group were ac-
companied by their sponsor. Mrn.
Mary Colvin. and a guest, Mrs.
E. R. Schulz. During the sup-
per hour, a farewell gift was
presented to Gloria Galvan, the
only graduate in the class.
On Wednesday at four o'clock
the Homemaking J group, ac-
companied by their sponsor. Mrs.
Colvin, and the chapter parents,
Mr. and Mrs. W. R. Gore and
Mr. and Mrs. R. G. Crosby, held
their picnic in the Bastrop State
Park.
The Homemaking III group will
have their party today (Thurs-i
day i and the eighth grade junioi
Homemakers will have theirs on
Monday, May 20.

BASTROP COUNTY
TB ASSOCIATION
GIVES SCHOLARSHIP
As a step towaa educating the
genera! public in a fight against
TB, the Bastrop County Tuber-
culosis Association is sponsoring
a 6-week scholarship for Mrs. Le-
titia Green, school nurse for Bas-
trop County Colored Schools.
Mrs. Green will train from June
2 through July II in the Com-
munity Education Workshop at
Wiley College located at Marshall.
Texas. Her course of study will
include methods in health educa-
tion and family welfare. She was
recommended for the scholarship
by Dr. J. L. Brown, Coordinator
of Workshops, Prairie View, Col-
jege.
Mrs. Green has worked with the
Bastrop County Tuberculosis As-
sociation and has finished giving
tuberculosis patch tests to color-
ed school children in Bastrop and
Smithville.
Her job as county school nurse
is to carry on a health education
program among the colored
schools in Bastrop County, and
the Tuberculosis Association, in
sponsoring the educational scho-
larship, is planning to carry for-
ward a vigorous campaign against
tuberculosis during the coming
year. This fight is being made
possible by money raised from
the sale of Tuberculosis Christ-
mas Seals.
Historical Society
To Have Hobby
Show
The Bastrop Historical Society
will have an Art, Hobby and An-
tique Show during the three days
of Homecoming, at 702 South
Main.
The building will be specially
arranged for the occasion, with
valuable and interesting piece* of
antique furniture, and a special
display of any hobbies and art
piece's available in the town.
Anyone who would like to make
such a display will be welcome
to do so, may contact Mrs. Oren
Eskew, or any member of the
Society.

Reverend Victor Goertz, son of
Rudolph Goertz of Rockne and
Hettie Bartsch, deceased. was
born Jun< 9, 1928. He received
his primary education at the Sac-
red Heart School, Rockne, and en-
tered St. John's Seminary in Sept-
ternber, 1940. Of the family of
twelve children, he is the fourth
to enter religious life. In addition
to his brother. Reverend Alois
Goertz. two of hi.- sister-. Sister
M Aloysia, O. S. B., and Sister
M. Walburga, O. S. B., both of
San Antonia, have pronounced
vows as Benedictine nuns. Other
members of the family are Mrs.
Martin Goertz and Mrs. Alvin
Frerich, Mark, Anna Mae, Bero-
adette, Marcella, Elmer, and Wil-
liam, all of Rockne.
Reverend Bernad Goertz, son
of Mr. and Mrs. Joe B. Goertz
of Rockne, born July 4, 192K,
also completed his primary
studies at Sacred Heart School

inary in September, 1940. Oth-

Four Ball Golf
Tournament To
Be Held Sunday
Mrs. Jack McCreary <>f Aus-
tin won the golf ball in the 1h-
hole flight and Mrs. V. M. How-
sley of Smtihville for the H-holc
flight in the regular Tuesday
morning game of the !.<>st Pines
Women's Golf Association.

held proceeding the game. Mrs.
Art hi." Edwards was elected vice
president, to replace Mrs. F. H.
Bates of Smithville.
The club will sell sandwiches
and coffee at the club house Sun-
day, May 25, during the 4-ball
tournament, according to Mrs. P.
J. Dodson, president.

CLUB TO ELECT
NEW OFFICERS
A special meeting of the Bn-
trop Band Parent- Club will be
held Tuesday night. May 27. for
the purpose of electing new of-
ficers.
At the regular meeting of the
club, held Monday night, A J.
Woehl, Sr., Hugh McPhaul and
Mrs. Man Murchlson were ap-
pointed as a nominating commit-
tee by W. R. Gore, president.
The club voted to have a clo-
set built in the band hall to -tor-
uniforms, during the summer
months

Bastrop travelcade on their pub-
licity tour for the Homecoming
and Rodeo or. Monday and THey-
day, June 1 and 2.

The Bastrop Lions Club held
its regular meeting on Tuesday
nmht, May 20, at th<- State Park
Refectory.
The Pledge of Allegiance was
led by Lion Cecil l-ong, and Lion
P. J. Dodson gave the Invocation.
In appreciation of the work
that Lion J. W Griffin has done
for th club during his stay here,
the Lions presented him with a
suit, shirt ami tie. The presenta-
tion was made by Lion Farris.
Mrs. Griffin was handed a check
from the Lions.
Mrs. R. M Wiley and Mrs. Ver-
non Fskew were named co-chair-
men for the Kiddie Parade as the
Lion part in the annual Home-
coming. Lions W. H. Kesselus,
W. J Brinkmeyei, E. C. Founder,
j and Lincoln Farris will be the
assisting committee from the
club.
The club is hoping to have two
j delegates to attend fth«^ Lions
International Convention which
will be held in June in Mexico
City.
Lion Lincoln Farris introduc-
ed Re< -e Turnei of Austin, guest
speaker, who discussed the Rus-
sian situation, involving Russia
and the United States as world
factors.
His talk was both informative
and impressive, and appreciated
by everyone present.
As soon as the softball field
is ready for play this summer,
the Bastrop Lions Club will play
the Elgin Kiwanis. The time and
date nf this game will be announ-
ced later.

the occasion were Lion Hawes,
Campbell, Joe Love, A. I' Simp-
son, Harry Payne and Thurlow
B. Weed, all <>f Austin.

The members of the Bastrop
Historical .Society will have a
Silver Tea from 5 till 7 o'clock
on Saturday afternoon, June 7,
as a special feature of Home-
coming.
Hostesses for the occasion will
wear authentic historical cos-
tumes, which will lend a most
appropriate background for the
affair.
Proceeds from the tea will be
used for the remodeling of the 1
building, which ha- recently been
purchased by the Bastrop His-
torical Society and the Bastrop
Indies Reading Circle, into a
Museum for the preservation of
historic relics and items of inter-
est in and around Bastrop.
Everyone is cordially invited to
come, especially visitors, who will
find this an occasion for meet-
ing old friends, and seeing exact-
ly what is being planned by the
local groups.
Calvary Episcopal
Church
Sacrament of the Holy Com-
munion will be celebrated at 9
AM Sunday, May 25, at Calvary
•Episcopal Church by the Rev.
Gray M. Blandy, Dean of the
Episcopal Seminary at Austin,
it was announced by R. Scott
Copeland, minister-in-charge.
The United Thank Offering of
the women of the church will be
presented at this service.
Members of ihe Church recently
confirmed will make their first
communion as a corporate group
Because of several conflicts the
11 o'clock morning prayer and
sermon will not be held.
The Sunday School will be held
in the Parish House of the Church
at 9 AM, and will go into the
Church after classes in time to
enable the teachers and confirmed
membrs to take Sacrament of
Communion.
Travelcade To
Make Tours
The Batrop Travelcade, adver-
tising the Homecoming and Ro-
deo on June f>-7-X, will leave Bas-
trop from the front of the Ad-
vertiser office, Monday, June 2, a*
fc AM, according to Cecil Long
and Jake Rabenriburg, co-chair-
men.
The Travelcade of approxi-
mately 40 or " 0 car- will be led
by Sheriff E. D. Cartwright and
a highway patrolman. Accom-
panying the group will be the Bas
trop High School Band, a western
band and the Army Air Force Re-
cruiting sound truck, to furnish
music and sound effects.
Everyone will be wearing Wes-
tern regalia, and have their cars
decorated with placards and
crepe paper.
The group will tour San Mar-
cos, Lockhart, Gonzales, Yoakum,
Columbus, La Grange, Schulen-
burg, Weimar and Smithville on
Monday, and on Tuesday, they
will go to Austin, Round Rock,
Georgetown, Taylor, Rockdale,
Lexington, Giddings and Flgin.
Each business house is asked
to have a car in the Travelcade
one of the two day. An addi-
tional 8 or 10 cars will l e needed
for the band,
