It was my privilege on March
•I to pay tribute on the floor of
the Senate to three Senators who
have served ably for 20 years
or more. They are Senator Carl
Hayden of Arizona, 2<! years of
service, and Senator,- Harry BynJ
of Virginia and Pat McCarran of
Nevada, 20 years each. My good
friend, Senator Dick Russell of
Georgia observed his twentieth
anniversary of service January
12.
After mentioning the accom-
plishments of these Senators, I
added:
"Mr. President. I wish now to
pay tribute to another great Am-
erican. Texa- takes pride in the
fact that the beloved former
Speaker of the House of Repre-
sentatives, Sa Rayburn, today
marks the fortieth anniversary
of his being sworn in as a mem-
ber of that great public body.
Mi President, no man in public
life today command* a higher de-
cree of respect, devotion and af
fection from those who know him
than does Sam Rayburn."
Congressman Walter Rogers,
Pa m pa.
Tructt Railey of Cleburne, re
presenting the Brazos Electric
Transmission Co-Op, was in the
office to ask that we reserve a
dining room for a luncheon later
this month for some thirty mem-
bers of the Co-Op. They want
to discuss policies affecting the
generation and transmission of
power by rural electric eo op with
members of the House of Repre-
sentatives living in the Brazos
District, which extend from the
Gulf to the Panhandle, and with
Senator Price Daniel and my
self. I am looking forward to
seeing them.
Attended a luncheon here for
Gene Autry, native Texan and
cowboy singer extraordinary.
Gene was kind enough to auto-
graph photos of himself for
Lynda Bird and Lucy, my two lit
tie girls. Gene gets plenty of
attention from kid- wherever he
goes, and he's a fine example for
them. . . a good old clean-living
Texas boy who has made good
in a big way.
by stimuli, from
without and from within. When
desire is exalted and mighty,
God is able to enrich human life.
In public worship attention is
centered in God and a feeling of
-we and adoration is engender-
ed. This change-, what a man
wants. The expression of gra-
titude in hymns of thanksgiving
is warming, mellowing. and
change desire. Awareness of
guilt and confession of sin and
petition for forgiveness make
strong aspiration and yearning.
The challenge of the Bible pas-
age, the sermon and the hymn
of commitment open wide all hu-
man faculties to the holy acti-
vity of God. The prayer of in-
tercession create,-, a feeling of
human solidarity and mutual de-
pendence upon fiod.
To all this is added the mov-
ing impact of great music, the
influence of noble architecture,
the beauty of light through stain
ed glass, the melting power of
sacred memory, the pulsing of
common emotion through the
congregation. With ample justi-
fication did Jesus promise, Where
two or three are gathered toge-
ther in my name, there am 1 in
their midst. And out of the ex-
perience of the Psalmist came
the cry:
As a deer longs for the
watercourse
So my whole being longs
for thee, O God.
Air minded Texans from all
