TO THE PEOPLE
OF BASTROP
When I announced my candidacy for the
office of < 11y alderman in the Advertiser last week.
I had filer! to fill the vacancy on the ticket created
By the retirement of I om C. Chalmers, who has
served in that position for the past four years,
after Mr C lialniers stated that he did not intend
to Ire a candidate for alderman this year. My
filing filled the ticket with N. R. Simpson and
Cecil l.ontf, with three to lie elected.
Since that time, another candidate has filed
for the office, creating a "race".
It was not my intention to run aR.unst the
two encumbents who are, I think, good hard-
working t ouncilmen, with the best interests of
the town .it heart, and who are already thoroughly
familiar with the city's future plans and activities.
I would b - very presumptions to feel qualified to
take the pi t e of either Mr Long or Mr Simpson.
f urthermore, I do not feel that this is the
time to disrupt the town with personal prejudices,
or to create political splits that ser e only to cause
unpleasant friction and to hinder progress.
Ah J stated last week, I feel that now, more
than ever before, the future of Bastrop depends on
its unity its combined effort toward accomplish
nient \X ithout the unity, there will be no ar
complishmcnt, and petty bickering will quickly
cause such splits to develop.
I he city council, as far as 1 can see now is
working in complete harmony, putting forth every
effort to work out the city's problems to the best
advantages of all concerned, and concentrating
on the formulation of a master plan for the over-
all improvement of the town.
My sole reason for filing to serve as
alderman was the hope that perhaps through the
columns of the Advertiser I might bring a better
understanding of the < ity government to the peo
pl«- an insight into just what is being done and
why and to find the answers to the questions,
complaints, and misstatements that frequently arise
from lack of information.
Now rather than risk the possibility of hiction,
or cau*e anv disruption in the city s plans and
<tc11\ ities .ilre <d> well inder way, 1 respectfully
withdraw as a candidate.
I urii grateful to all of vou who have enthu-
-'lastk aIIv off* t -1i voui suppoit and encourage
nient. and I appret late very much your expressions
of friends hip
