Bastrop CofC News
BY MARGARET PRimi
We wish to thank little Mias
C.aylo Rnthman for representing
Biistrop In the I/x-klmri parade on
Saturday momiiik' of last wick
fiaylo, dressed in her Haboratr
cowgirl regalia, rode the liood of
Dad's car and represented the
Chamber of Commerce. Also our
thanks to Mrs. Joe Lee Rutliman.
and Mrs. Madeline Sharp for as-
sisting in this endeavor. Our town
president Jim was in his usual
gay spirits as a clown with the
Shrine group.
Swimming lessons have started
with children of all ages taking
part. This program is one that is
responded to from all areas, awl
is one of the finest programs
available to the children.
Numerous out-of-state cars were
in Bastrop over the weekend. Many
were in the park for vacations and
commuting to HcmlsFair.
Work is progressing on the float
and we hope to have it completed
before too long. With limits! help
and time, progress is rather sk>w.
Many have donated time, money
and material. Thank* to Jim Shone.
Carl Cederholm for time and to
others for materials. We believe
thai the float will be very pretty
when completed.
VISITORS:
Mrs. Graver C. King, formerly
of Bastrop needed brochures to
send to Missouri,
Mrs. Merle Buchanan. Miss Nina
Hency and E. R. King of Bryan
needed information. They were on
their way to HemisFair.
Mrs. Richard Dickinson. Cindy
and Sandy were Chamber visitors.
Mrs. P. J. Dodson was a Cham-
ber visitor. It is good to see 'Fea-
sor Dodson back at the golf course,
if only to watch the other twys tee
off.
Arena Dust
The word Champion is spelled a
thousand different ways, Bastrop
is privileged to have a young citi-
zen that fits almost all of those
ways. I have talked to quite a few
people and they all say the same
thing about this fine young man, he
is courteous, smiling ami always
lias a good word to say about
everyone he knows. This l>oy rode
into the arena at Halletsville last
week handicapped by working all
day and also riding a (-rippled
horse. But this young man broke
a recoI'd that has stood fur 23
yea re. Wayne French roped and
tied a calf in 9.fi seconds, that is
an unheard of time even for pro-
fessional ropers. Wayne is as far
as I can ascertain the first boy
from Bastrop to qualify for the
National High School Rodeo Finals.
Just to qualify lor these shows is
in itself just about the highest
honor that n young person can

hope for. In my honest opinion.
Bastrop could not have a better
representative at the show in To-
peka, Kansas.
This last weekend was literally
loaded with shows and rodeos. The
Hi anight sisters were in the SCT-
HSA show at Austin and then had
to leave real fast in order to get
to Lockhart for the annual rodeo
that was held there. At this lime
1 liave not had any information on
how they did at those shows. John-
ny Uathman and Gary Townscnd
brought home some of the steer
roping money from Lockhart, 1
believe they flnshed in third place.
Saturday, June 22 will he our
next attempt at slagging the show
for the Teen Tower. If only Mother
Nature will go along with us, we
] should have a fairly good turn out
for the show. It has been adver-
tised quite well all over central
Texas and again we will have the
