following their marriage May 10. Dinah
is an education services representative

GEORGE STEINMAN
SCHOLARSHIP FUND
Dr. Robert C. Monk, chairman of the
division of religion and philosophy, has
announced the establishment of a
George Steinman Scholarship Fund.

ligion. He was
chairman of the di-
vision from 1948-
1966.
The scholarship
fund honoring Dr. Steinman will be
awarded annually to a deserving stu-
dent preparing for Christian service.
An endowment is envisioned that will
guarantee a full tuition scholarship.
A nucleus of $1,000 for the scholar-
ship has been pledged by some of Dr.
Steinman's former students in the
religion department. The fund is being
expanded to all former students of Dr.
Steinman, as well as all McM alumni
and friends, in the hope of reaching a
minimum of $15,000 — thus providing
enough income for the full tuition
scholarship. Contributions may be sent
to the George Steinman Scholarship
Fund, Box 335 McM Station, Abilene,
TX 79605.
COLLEGE NEWS
Dr. Vernon G. Spence '46 has been named chairman of the di-
vision of social sciences effective June 1, replacing Dr. S. B. Thomp-
son who is retiring for administrative duties. Dr. Thompson will
continue as a full time faculty member. Dr. Spence recently read a
paper at the Texas Historical Assn. annual meeting in Austin.
McM has received a matching fund grant (must be matched
by other funds) of $11,000 from the U. S. Office of Education of
HEW for the purpose of establishing a language laboratory. This is
the first phase of a multi-media learning center at McM, in keeping
with the new processes of the technological age.
McM students honored P. E. Shotwell by dedicating this year's
"Totem" (yearbook) to him. Mr. Shotwell retired in May, 1968 after
52 years of coaching, 12 years as McM's Athletic Director.
Dr. W. Norton Jones, chairman of the division of science
and mathematics has been named as Piper Professor of 1969. The
award is given by the Minnie Stevens Piper Foundation of San An-
tonio to only 10 professors each year, specifically for teaching excel-
lence in the field of science, rather than for research.
Peggy Parrott, McM junior, has been selected to attend a two
week Summer Honors Program at Rice University. The purpose of
the all expense paid program is to stimulate interest in graduate
study in the social science field.
Ruth Cooley, McM junior, was crowned Miss Abilene 1969 on
March 26. Gloria Pineda, a McM freshman, was 1st runner-up and
talent trophy winner. Ruth is the daughter of McM alumni, Rev.
J. Alvis '43 and Margilee (Ryan x '43) Cooley.
The Office of Economic Opportunity has approved a $65,783
grant to the Community Action Program of Taylor County for
a renewal of the Upward Bound program at McM for another year.
This will underwrite the program for 53 underpriviledged high
school students, with the aim of motivating them for college.
Mrs. Ada C. Wilkins, associate professor of English, has been
named an advisory member of the Marquis Biographical Library
Society.
Dick Whittick, McM senior history major, has been awarded
an East-West Center Scholarship for graduate study in Southeast
Asian history. The East-West Center is designed to promote cul-
tural interchange between American and Asian students with the
hope of a better understanding between the two continents.
Dr. Richard von Ende, chairman of the division of fine arts has
been named to an advisory council for the Texas Assn. of Music
Schools. Dr. von Ende, a former president of TAMS, was asked to
assist in constitution revision for the organization.
It was announced by McMurry's Athletic Depar+ment at the re-
cent Alumni Day '69 dinner that a lifetime pass for two people to
all athletic events will be presented to retiring faculty members.
This included those who have retired in previous years.
An award of $370 from the Bendix Corporation and a grant
of $150 from the West Texas chapter of the Institute of Electronic
and Electrical Engineers, plus much ingenuity, has enabled the
McM Student Physics Society to set up a ground station for re-
ceiving pictures from the ESSA weather satellite orbiting the globe.
Vicki Babington, McM junior, was one of only 14 to win a na-
tional medal in original oration at the Phi Kappa Delta tourna-
ment in Tempe, AZ, in March.
An article by Joe H. Murray, assistant professor of business ad-
ministration, will be published soon in "Insurance Field," a bi-
monthly national magazine.
The largest graduating class in McMurry history, 151 seniors,
received their diplomas at a combined commencement and bac-
calaureate service on Sunday, May 25. Bishop Lance Webb, a 1931
McM graduate spoke.
