Shakespearean soccer comedy takes bone-
headed approach to dispel gender stereotypes
By Steve Warren Contributing Film Critic
William Shakespeare, the dude who wrote
"10 Things I Hate about You," has, like, done it
again. Only not as well.
"She's the Man" (not to be confused with
1987's "He's My Girl") is another of
Shakespeare's romantic comedies, updated and
set in an American high school. The original title
was 'Twelfth Night," but that's been changed for
the sake of jocks who can't count past 11 with
their shoes on.
It's hard to knock a plot that's endured for 400
years, but it's easy to ruin it with the wrong
actors. I don't want to discourage the employ-
ment of the visually impaired, but sometimes
casting directors do a lame job. One of those
times is when they have to find unrelated actors
to play identical twins.
Amanda Bynes stars as Viola Hastings. Her
brother Sebastian, whom she can impersonate
because people confuse them with each other
anyway, is played by James
Kirk, who is several inches
taller and whose head looks
vaguely like hers on steroids.
When Arnold Schwarzenegger
and Danny DeVito played
twins it was supposed to be a
joke, but these guys are serious.
Sebastian transfers to Illyria Prep while Viola
remains at Cornwall High. Cornwall cuts the
girls' soccer team, and the coach won't let Viola

play for the boys' team, whose first game is
against Illyria in two weeks.
Wouldn't you know, Sebastian goes to
London for two weeks so his band can play at a
rock festival. He asks Viola to cover for him, not
suspecting she's going to become him so she can
play soccer for Illyria to prove her point. Never
having been a boy before, Viola goes for lessons
in masculinity — to Paul
(Jonathan Sadowski), her hair-
dresser. It's never established
that Paul is gay, but he spends
most of his time with two
beautiful girls he never touch-
es.
Viola-as-Sebastian meets
her — er, his — roommate, Duke Orsino.
Another word about casting. Duke, who's sup-
posed to be gorgeous hunk who gives Viola a

Nostalgic voyeurism
Doc captures erotic bliss of New York City before rise of AIDS
J
By Steve Warren Contributing Film Critic
Now in their 50s and 60s, the men inter-
viewed in "Gay Sex in the 70s" have happy
memories of the sex they had between
Stonewall and AIDS, the period Joseph
Lovett's film spans.
We hear a little about the pre-Stonewall
era and a little about AIDS, but most of the
film is about what we did and where we did
it. Even an unhappy ending can't dispel the
overall impression of millions of Alices in a
sexual Wonderland.
One drawback is that the film is totally
New York-centric. Wherever they came from,
the speakers all wound up in Manhattan dur-
ing the Golden Age of Sexual Freedom. With
cronyism worthy of the Bush
administration, Lovett draws
on his friends for testimony.
That they include photogra-
phers, artists and pornogra-
phers take care of the film's
visual aspects. Doctors supply
technical information. And a
shockingly mild Larry Kramer must have
been heavily edited or sedated.
Still photos excellently convey a sense of
the time, place and what went on. The porn
clips add atmosphere, but they won't boost
catalog sales for Hand in Hand Productions.
"Gay Sex in the 70s" is clear in its focus,
and what it chooses to cover, it covers well.
