Houston PAC endorses Cohen
in race for Texas Legislature
Group’s president says Democrat will ‘take a stand’ for GLBT people
From Staff Reports
The Houston GLBT Political Caucus Political
Action Committee has endorsed Ellen Cohen,
the Democratic candidate for state representative
in Texas House District 134.
District 134 includes a large portion of
Houston’s Montrose neighborhood, along with
Bellaire, West University, River Oaks and part of
Meyerland.
Cohen, president and CEO of the Houston
Area Women’s Center for the past 15 years, is
challenging Republican incumbent Martha
Wong.
Wong voted in committee for the anti-gay-
marriage amendment, allowing the measure to
move to the House floor. When the vote was
taken to put the amendment on the ballot in 2005,
Wong was officially recorded as “present, not
voting,” officials with the GLBT PAC said.
Jennifer Pool, president of the PAC, said that
Wong has “ignored the wishes of her constituen-
cy and voted against the district, and when given
the opportunity on the floor to vote against this
anti-gay legislation, she opted to play politics
with the lives of thousands of GLBT Texas fam-
ilies, many of whom live in her district.”
Pool said the organization chose to issue an early
endorsement in the race between Cohen and
Wong because “we see District 134 as a high pri-
ority.”
PAC officials said Cohen’s priorities will be
improving public education, restoring children’s
health insurance, finding solutions to the growing
cost of college tuition and lowering insurance
rates for homeowners.
They said she has “pledged to work diligently
to restore balance and integrity to the Texas
Legislature.”
“What the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgen-
der community has in Ellen Cohen is a candidate
who will take a stand for this community,” Pool
said. “Ellen will fully represent the district and
ensure that all her constituents have a voice in the

Texas Legislature, and not just a select few.”
Pool said the PAC will “commit our
resources” to Cohen’s campaign.
Tamiui Wallace, vice president of the PAC,
said the organization has focused its voter identi-
fication efforts on District 134 since 2004.”
“We have identified thousands and thousands
of voters in the district who repeatedly told us
that they do not support and deplore legislative
attacks on the GLBT community that we have
seen in past sessions,” Wallace said.
Wallace said Cohen has block walks sched-
uled for every weekend in May, and the PAC is
asking the GLBT community and its allies to par-
ticipate in Cohen’s campaigns until the
November elections.
