Gay, Lesbian fond sponsors museum exhibit
Party thanking group marks first
time community is recognized for
donations to museum, official says
From Staff Reports
The Gay and Lesbian Fund for Dallas was rec-
ognized as a major sponsor of the Dallas
Museum of Art's latest exhibition, "Modernism
in American Silver: 20th Century Design in
America," during a private party June 20.
It was the first time the Dallas GLBT commu-
nity has received public recognition for a contri-
bution to the museum, according to Mark
Niermann, who worked with Keith Nix to head
up fundraising efforts for the program.
He said the museum is the largest institution
the fund has ever sponsored.
Niemann said the Gay and Lesbian Fund for
Dallas has contributed indirectly to the Dallas
Museum of Art in the past through participation
in "Two By Two For AIDS and Art," an annual
event held at the home of Ftoward and Cindy
Rachofsky to benefit the American Foundation
for AIDS Research and the museum.
But organizers said that "Modernism in
American Silver" is part of a separate program
designed to forge a long-term relationship
between GLBT philanthropists and the museum.
Lucilo Pena, a museum board member, donat-
ed seed money to start off the fund's efforts to
sponsor a specific exhibit, said Rudy Pollan
director of major gifts and planned giving for the
museum.
Pollan said Pena's efforts have been "fully
supported" by the museum's board.
"Our hope is that the Dallas LGBT communi-
ty sees our partnership with the fund as yet anoth-
er sign of the ... [museum's] unqualified commit-
ment to equality in the arts," he added.
The Gay and Lesbian Fund for Dallas is
included in the list of sponsors at the entrance to
the exhibition and also in a plaque with other
sponsors in the museum's concourse.
"Modernism in American Silver" opetied at
Dallas Museum of Art on June 18 and runs
through Sept. 24. The exhibit features more than
200 works exploring the creative development of
the American silver industry's forays into mod-
ernist desigji, according to information on the
museum's Web site, www.dallasmuseum-
ofart.org.
Among those attending the June 20 private party honoring the Gay and Lesbian Fund for Dallas' sponsorship of an
exhibit at the Dallas Museum of Modern Art were, from left, Roberto de la Cruz, Dolph Haas, Susan Spalter, Billy
Rodriguez, Jay Oppenheimer, Paul Barnes, Keith Nix, Richard Peeples, Mark Niermann, Enrique MacGregor and Rudy
Pollan.
