Log Cabin to honor good friend'
Dallas chapter's 10th annual Grand 01' Party to feature
speech by U.S. Congress' only openly gay Republican
Staff Writer
By David Webb
A local gay Republican favorite —
who happens to be straight — will be
honored for his generosity to Log
Cabin Republicans at the Dallas
chapter's Grand 01" Party on
Saturday night.
Trammel S. Crow, who is presi-
dent of the Crow Family Foundation,
will be honored at the 10th annual
local celebration in recognition of his
10 years of friendship and gifts to the
gay political group. Crow is the son
of famed Dallas developer Trammel
Crow.
The keynote speaker for the cele-
bration will be U.S. Rep. Jim Kolbe,
of Arizona, chairman of the House
Appropriations subcommittee on
Foreign Operation and the only open-
ly gay Republican congressman.
Grand 01' Party co-chairs Carla
Halbrook and James Campbell noted
that Crow underwrote the first cele-
bration 10 years ago.
"He's been a very good friend to
us," Halbrook said. "He's given a
great amount of money to our chap-

Gay rights advocates hope for
favorable ruling from justices

Conventional wisdom says the New Jersey
Supreme Court will decide whether or not to
legalize same-sex marriage on or before
Wednesday That is the eve of Chief Justice
Deborah T. Poritz's 70th birthday, and by law, it
is her last day on the court. Many observers
believe that Poritz will make sure that what
might be a landmark decision will be released
before she leaves the bench.
But conventional wisdom has been wrong
before.
No one expected the Washington Supreme
Court to wait nearly a year-and-a-half before
issuing its marriage decision. Optimistic couples
who were preparing to wed last fall twiddled
their ring fingers until July, when the justices dis-
appointed the gay community with a fractured
ruling against same-sex families*

The monument took three years to plan and construct and cost $225,000.

He was 69.
Studds died several days after he
was admitted to the hospital after
collapsing while walking his dog:,
his husband, Dean Hara, said. He
fell unconscious on Oct. 3 because
of what doctors at Boston Medical
Center later determined was a blood
clot in his lung, according to Hara.
