running east and west on the north side of the LX Range. Those line fences were built to stop the cattle drifting from one range to another. There were scarcely any settlements trough this Panhandle country in those days, Vernon – Clarendon – Mobeetie & Atascosa were the only towns in the Panhandle Country. Well in those days antelope were thicker on the plains than cattle are now. They would run up against this fence in big herds and you could see the hair fairly fly off of them. They hardly ever would a one of them get through the fence. The fence was built with cedar posts set 30 feet apart with four barbed wires & three stays between each post. So when cattle or anything would strike it they would just spring back. Ha ha.
