Editorial
When you cast your ballot this Tuesday in the special
election, will you get a feeling that it is really not worth the
effort? Even so you may feel you should expect more out of
your student government.
The SA Senate's problem is twofold—lack of money and
lack of power within the structure of the university.
Maintaining the SA office cuts heavily into an already
small budget. The services provided—distribution of
freebie books, Campaniles, tickets and just general
directing of traffic—are vital ones. As for the rest of their
functions, the Senate faces the problem of having no
money for any additional activities and consequently no
new activities to justify calling for more funds.
Most of the funds and ability to accomplish anything—
call it power, if you will—reside in the colleges anyway.
Even what could be the SA's major role—as a forum of
discussion of issues concerning the university—now
seems to be taken care of by the Committee of the
Presidents and Masters. While the Senate approves the
SLOB's and the chess club as dependent organizations,
the Committee of the Presidents and Masters prepare a
recommendation which could increase the number of
coed colleges. While the decision should be made by the
committee, it seems appropriate that the Senate make a
recommendation in their stead as the "representatives" of
the student body.
Generating discussion about issues affecting the
university is one way of increasing the Senate's
effectiveness, and—since talk is cheap—without
increasing the budget.
The following is the Thresher's policy for editorial page material.
Letters to the Editor should be no longer than 350 words (unless discussed in
person with the editor), typewritten, signed, and with current phone number
provided. No unsigned letters will be printed.
Guest Editorials may be submitted on any topic of interest. There are no length
limitations on editorials; all other requirements as with letters stand.
Unsigned Editorials represent a consensus of staff opinion.
Signed Editorials represent only that particular staff member's opinion and
should not be construed as more than a privately held opinion.
