SA filing deadline draws light turnout
Tuesday's filing deadline for
the Feb. 21 Student Associa-
tion officer elections passed
with eighteen of the twenty-
seven positions drawing only
one candidate and five posts
unfiled for.
Heading up the contested
races are the two candidates
for president, Roy Lee Beller, a
junior from SRC and Marian
Barber, a junior from Jones.
John Cockerham, Matt
Muller, and Mark Whitney
were the only candidates for
the other executive council
posts of external affairs vice
president, internal affairs vice
president and secretary-
treasurer. The off-campus
senator posts remain unfilled.
Senior honor council
representatives attracted nine
candidates for the four
positions. Seeking that office
are Becky Mathre, Hanszen;
Jeff Wood, SRC; Marlene
Madden, Brown; Catherine
Anspon, Brown; Robert
Winter, SRC; Allan Shenoi,
Baker; Lou Montana, Jones;
Bill Wade, SRC; and Deborah
Werkert. For the junior posts,
the number of candidates
matches the number of
openings with Tom Kobay-

tors. Three sophomores, John
Heaner, Hanszen; Liz Isreal,

Lovett, will try for the two
posts. The two fifth-year
representative positions
remain vacant.
Gene Creely, barring any
massive write-in, will become
Rice Program Council
president, while Susan
Meszynski will be RPC
secretary. Kevin Campbell,
Lovett and Steve Bosse, SRC
will battle for the veep
position.
Joe Lueckenhoff and Alex
Arts, both of Lovett, will serve
on the University Council and
Tom Willcutts, SRC is the lone
candidate for University
Court chairman.
The race for Thresher
editor is the only publication
job to interest more than one
person. Filing for the position
were Steve Sullivan, Lovett,
David Butler, Hanszen, and
Michelle Smith, Brown. The
business manager's position
still lacks a candidate. Present
Campanile editor and
business manager, Helen
Toombs and Becky Mathre,
filed for reelection unopposed.
Also on the ballot are two
Honor Code amendments, one
a proposal to allow the Honor
Council to consider previous
convictions when assessing
penalties for an Honor Code

increased funding for NASA,

drafted the legislation

in Texas while he was in the

federal intervention in civil

petition with 25 names must
be turned in at the SA office
second floor RMC before 5pm.
The offices will be filled in a
special election after midterm
break.
