Doonesbury
Dunkers suffer
from coaching
To the editor:
Every year, as Rice's athletic teams
go through their numerous seasons,
attempts are made to find reasons for
their success or failure. The men's
football and basketball teams are the
subject of immense speculation. Yet,
there are many other teams which
seem to escape the public eye. One of
these teams is the women's
basketball team. At the end of many
Thresher articles describing the
team's recent losses (they are 4-18
this season, 9-17 last year), the head
coach, Linda Turner, is quoted as
saying something such as she's proud
of her team and foresees a great
future for them. But will that future
come? My contention is that it will
not. At least not under the present
coach. The team is composed of a
group of very fine talented athletes
who should be having a successful
season. Each one of them has proven
that she can play good Southwest
Conference-calibre basketball.
Nevertheless, an important element
is missing. 1 cannot help but believe
that it is the lack of good, solid head
coaching.
Why, you ask? Coach Linda
Tucker seems to be a woman who
cannot get her priorities straight.
How long can the excuse of having
an inexperienced team last? What
will the excuse be next year? No team
with four returning starters
(according to the media guide)
should be considered inexperienced.
So many games this season that
should have been won, including
games against Houston, Tech,
Texas, A&M; SMU and TCU, were
lost by small margins. It would seem
that any coach who loses that many
close games should be called into
question. Close shouldn't be good
enough. As far as getting her
priorities straight, she is a coach who
cannot, seemingly, separate her
personal life from her professional
one. Taking a companion to
California for the University of
Pacific tournament was inappro-
priate regardless of the friend's sex.
Not only is it thoroughly
inappropriate, but in some ways, it
cannot help but undermine the
respect of any team. She has
undermined her own authority over
the team by playing constant,
ineffectual mind games with players
who can't consistently know what is
expected from them.
As a former member of the team, 1
feel sufficiently qualified to comment
on these facts. There are a number of
other questions, but 1 am not in
proper position to ask them for the
time being. However, I must be
adamant in saying that these are my
own opinions and do not reflect
those of my former teammates.

In Friday's issue, credit was
regrettably omitted for Benji
Hegre, who also took campaign
photos. In the February 8 issue,
two photos were incorrectly
credited. The rugby photo
attributed to M. Gladu was
actually taken by Art Rabeau, and
the basketball picture attributed to
S. Buchanan was the work of
Diane Gilabert.
