I have done nothing since I have been her \
but promote OUR OWN GENERAL ASSEMBLY'S PROGRAM.
It was clearly understood from the first that
this' was my special work, and every one knew
perfectly just how I would push this program,
especially after I preached a sermon to teach _ .
in kay while Dr. Glasgow was away. With all this
I was careful not to offend any one with too
vigorous a program. I proposed only a teacher
training class, a thing they have been having
here before I came; and I dropped in suggestions
occasionally' for betterment in organization afd
method, but never have
become officious or
insistent in any of these things that are so
close to my heart for the saving of children
and youth. On one occasion while Dr. G. was
away I asked an elder of the Cumberland Church
to preach for us, as he was' rather noted for
hisr ability. My motive was to give the people
a change from my preaching and not to be at
all arbitrary. I was foolish in not seeing
the-pulpit supply committee first for theirconsent.
Well, this furnished the occasion
for one of these elders to bitterly rebuke
me. His rebuke flashed quickly from the point
at issue to my"new methods" which he claimed
I was trying to force on the church without the
consent of the session. I humbly begged his
pardon for my mistake in asking the Cumb. elder
to preach, and immediately called the session
together to apologize, at which meeting 'the
two aforesaid elders remained perfectly quiet
while the. rest wondered what it was all about,
declaring that they saw no affront to the session
for me to apologize about. As soon as Dr. G.
came home -the farme -of these two elders -was
turned on, and without any conference to clear up
the question or to give me a chance to show my
side of it I was notified that my conduct -during
the summer in the absence of the pastor
was very undesirable,to the session unseemly,
and requested that I leave off all B.S. activity
Boy's Band, Young people's work, or anything
that would touch these elders in any way*. I did
exactly what I saw they wanted me to do andresigned.
