Precious Memories
Sister Elnora Georgia Retledge Cooper-Pierce's soul took flight and
Joined her heavenly Father on May 31,1993.
She was the eldest child born to the parentage of the late Rev. and Mrs.
J. R. Retledge in Shreveport, Louisiana. During her early years, she
attended Hearne's Kindergarten and Stoner Hill Elementary School
Later, she graduated from Central High School. Sister Pierce graduated
Magna Cum Laude and received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Bishop
College. Spaulding Business College awarded her with an Associate
degree. She received a Master of Arts degree in Education from the
University of Texas at San Antonio. On January 20,1969, she accepted a
position as an educator in the San Antonio Independent School District. In
1988, sister Pierce retired.
On June 14,1928, she acknowledged Christ in her life under the pastorate
of her father and the evangelist, Rev. S. N. Gooden, at Oakland Baptist
Church. She allowed nothing to separate her from the love of God. As a
child. Sister Pierce played for rural churches which were pastored by her
father. At Evergreen Baptist Church, she initiated and developed the
Christian Education Department. She served faithfully as a soloist,
teacher, B.T.U. Directress, and musician for the Evergreen Baptist Church
radio Choir. Sister Pierce served with the Ministers' Wives in Louisiana
and California. She also served in various positions In Louisiana and
California state conventions and the National Baptist Convention, Incor-
porated. Upon arriving in San Antonio, her belief in fulfilling the Baptist
Covenant led her to unite with Mt Gilead Baptist Church. Upon establish-
ing permanent residency in San Antonio, she joined the Tried Stone Bap-
tist Church and served faithfully In various positions. On May 22,1983,
Sister Pierce united with West End Baptist Church, where she remained
a member until God called her home.
On November 29,1945, she united in Holy Matrimony with Professor
Roscoe Cooper of Hallsville, Texas. To this union, one son, Dr. J. R.
Cooper, was born. Later, this union was dissolved.
Sister Pierce married Rev. Peyton E. Pierce. No children were born to this
union. Rev. Pierce preceded her in death.
Sister Pierce leaves to cherish her memory: A devoted son and daughter-
in-law, J. R. and Ruby Ann Cooper of San Antonio; one brother, Mr. John
Wesley Retledge of Los Angeles, C A; one sister, Ms. Eilene Retledge of Los
Angeles, CA; one aunt, Mrs. Ruby Tyler of Mansfield, Louisiana; two
nieces, Joycelyn Retledge of San Antonio and Shirley Retledge of Los
Angeles, CA; two nephews, Mr. Lawrence Singleton of Los Angeles, CA
and Mr. Reginald Retledge of Houston; and a multiplicity of other
relatives and friends.
