Austin, Texas
Dear fnr. Math is;
As Deputy District Director for District § 8 of the
league of United tat in-American Citizens (LULAC} and as one who
has followed the Anti-Poverty Program carefully, I wish to
congratulate you for your alertness in seeing that the Ilouston-
fiarris County Economic Opportunity Commi ttee was a %et up*# comm-
ittee that completely ignored the Latin-American.
in-
l n ear I y May I nforrned the Mayor, County Judge, and the
CommunItv Council of the fact that the Maxican-American was i
adequately represented. I reminded them of the Act and the
"maximum feasible participation*" clause. They chose to ignore
me entirely.
#The LULAC organization has for 36 years been a civic organ-
ization working for and in the interest of the Let lit-American
in the United States.
f can truthfully sajz that LULAC was not approached by any-
one to participate, or to help in any way on the Houston- Harris
County Committee on Ant\-Poverty.
Fhe Houston LULACS sent 4 members to Tucson, Arizona in fate
Jgnuary to take part in the Southw^b Conference on Anti- Poverty.
We are vitally interested in the Anti- Poverty Programs because of
wffat they have to offer the Mexican-American.
We deplore the fact that the Me* can-American Is not represented
adequately^ on the committee both In its qual ity of memberehip and
i n the number serv i ng
As tne 2nd largest minority, in Houston, the programs that
this committee recommends will help many of us that are deprived*
We Know whet our problems are and w© know what we need*
u;e RIGHTFULLY DO-AMD a strong voice in any committee that will
have a say on any program that will affect us the Latin-American.
LULAC, stands ready to he of any help in any way and at any
time to serve in whatever capacity we can.
