COLONEL JAMES D. BOWEN
U. S. ARMY PRIMARY HELICOPTER SCHOOL COMMANDANT
Colonel James D. Bowen, a Master Army Aviator, came to Fort Wolters 1 September,
1968 from a staff assignment from the Army Aviation Center, Fort Rucker, Alabama.
The colonel was born in Williamston, North Carolina and entered the Army in 1941 as an
enlisted man. He was commissioned in 1943 upon completion of Officer Candidate School at
Fort Sill, Oklahoma.
Overseas service included Italy during the latter part of WWII, two tours in Germany
(1947-1950 and 1965-1967) and Korea.
Aviation assignments included serving as aviation officer for the 101st Airborne Division,
Fort Campbell, Kentucky, aviation officer for the Army Air Defense Command, Colorado
Springs, Colorado, and a three-year tour as executive for Army Aviation, Office of Personnel
Operations, Department of the Army.
Colonel Bowen was a 1939 graduate of Duke University and earned his master's degree in
1963 from George Washington University. He was also a graduate of the Army's Command and
Staff College and Army War College.
Colonel Bowen served as interim Center commander from September, 1969 to October
17, 1969
His decorations include the Army Commendation Medal and the Legion of Merit with an
Oak Leaf Cluster that was presented to him upon retirement for his services rendered at U. S.
Army Primary Helicopter Center/ School..
Colonel and Mrs. Bowen have two children, a son James, Jr., and daughter Cheryl.
