WATTS NEW IN THE ARTS
' he arts scoop rom Pennsylvania and Bastrop
Tom and I are entering
our third week in Penn-
sylvania and I'm having a
great time.
Last week an old
friend (not as old as I am,
but from years and conti-
nents past) treated me to
a visit to the Philadelphia
Museum of Art, where we
enjoyed a special show:
"Cezanne & Beyond." The
"beyond" part was viewing
his works juxtaposed with
those of artists he had in-
spired. For me, seeing the
works of Cassatt, Homer,
Monet, Renoir, the very
first bronze ever cast for
Degas (after his death)
and the best of the best,
Rodin, was the highlight
of my day.
In the tradition of
"Rocky," several young
men were using the steps
for their workouts- run-
ning to the top, dropping
for push-ups, running
back down then repeating
the act. As for me, I got
my workout climbing up
and down the inside stairs
at a much slower pace and
posing for a picture on
Rocky's footsteps in front
of the building.
Sm Ihv lie art
Thanks to the folks
back home, I'm keeping
up to date on happenings
n the Bastrop County
arts community:
Les Warren's pho-
tographic show, "Back
Pages," opens at the Mary
Nichols Art Gallery, 301
Burleson St. in Smith-
ville, on Saturday. Hours
are 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. on
Saturdays or by appoint-
ment. Call Karen Darr at
360-2080 for a personal
tour.
It's also Smithville's
First Saturday Arts Fes-
tival at the Gazebo, fea-
turing the music of Los
Esconditos. The children's
free craft will be kaleido-
scope-making. Paper tow-
el rolls are needed for this
project, and a box is set
up at the door of the Mary
JO
WATTS
Nichols Art Center for pa-
per towel roll donations.
On that same day we
will be installing more
pieces to the Smithville
Skate Park. It will be a
workday to hang what we
have ready and to do some
grouting. We'll be start-
ng at 9 a.m., and anyone
wanting to come help or
to just see the incredible
work that Stephanie Mc-
Nabb and her "Youth Art
Corps" have been doing
may do so.
Summer art camps
The Lost Pines Arti-
sans Alliance is sponsor-
ing art camps in July.
These five-day camps will
be held the weeks of July
13 and July 27 for first
graders and up and will
include a variety of proj-
ects using many different
mediums.
In week one, Sharon
Irwin will be doing the
jewelry and bead string-
ing wire wrapping; she
will also be doing altered
books (much like 3D col-
lage). Sharon is an LPAA
member who lives in
Paige. Vickie Woofard, a
retired school teacher liv-
ng in Bastrop, will teach
print making.
In week two, mask
making will be taught
by Anna Stanely. She is
a Master Performer and
Visual Artist for In The
Heart of the Beast and
Mask Theater in Minneso-
ta, working for more than
13 years as a performer.
Students will be making
masks and/or puppets
and doing a performance
at Smithville's First Sat-
urday Festival on July 4.
Artist Stephanie McNabb
will be teaching mosaics,

Watercolor workshop
Watercolor artist Eliz-
abeth Sullivan will teach
a workshop in the Elgin
Public
Library Community
Room on Sunday June 7,
from 1 p.m. - 4 p.m. The
cost for EAA members is
$5; for non-members, the
cost is $10. Bring water-
color paper, tube water-
colors, brushes of assorted
sizes, a palette (container
lid will work) and a con-
tainer for water. If you are
unable to bring materials,
you may purchase them
from the instructor for an
additional $5.
Although these are not
her only subjects, Eliza-
beth is well-known in
the area for her stylized
paintings of horses. Color-
ful and full of action and
movement, they're won-
derfully imaginative. I
also like her humorously-
captioned pictures of cats,
dogs, children and other
animals.
You can learn more by
going to Elizabeth's Web
site: www.ecsullivanart.
com. If this workshop is
delayed until after I get
home, I'll be sure to be in
it!
