A rican-American Heritage D ay on Saturday
A celebration of Afri-
can-American heritage
n Bastrop County will be
held on Saturday, Feb. 27
at 4 p.m. at the Jerry Fay
Wilhelm Center for the
Performing Arts.
Hosted by the Bastrop
Independent School Dis-
trict, along with the Af-
rican-American Heritage
Foundation, the first an-
nual African-American
Heritage Expo and Cele-
bration will showcase the
talents of many of the dis-
trict's children through
poetry readings, drama-
tizations and choral and
band presentations. The
expo will include ethnic
foods, clothing, music,
art, dance and histori-
cal artifacts, including
a display of the Buffalo
Soldiers and many more
items of interest to the
full Bastrop County com-
munity.
The program will be
emceed by James Irby of
Fox 7 and Shannon Pow-
ell of KXAN.
A scholarship will be
awarded to one of Bas-
trop's top students and
several Heritage Awards
to trailblazers in the
fields of education and
the arts will be present-
ed.
The accomplishments
of local trailblazers such
as award-winning, inter-
nationally-acclaimed mu-
sician Hannibal Lokum-
be, producer of American
Idol and BHS class of'89
graduate Ron DeShay,
former BISD superinten-
dent Roderick Emanuel
and County Judge Ron-
nie McDonald will be
highlighted.

Democrats from throughout Seriate District 18, which includes Bastrop
County, met at the Kerr Community Center on Saturday for workshops
on targeting, precinct chairs and use of computer resources and to
hear from candidates. The meeting was sponsored by district repre-
sentatives to the State Democratic Executive Committee, Vickie Vogel
of La Grange and Don Bankston of Richmond, and hosted by Bastrop
Democratic County Chair Barbara Nichols,

Texas Business Wom-
en, will present a day-
long Leadership Course
on Saturday, March 20
in Bastrop at the Blue-
bonnet Building, 650
Hwy. 21 E, 2.6 miles past
the Bastrop State Park
on the left. The class is
designed to help all busi-
ness women learn to bet-
ter manage people, proj-
ects and their personal
lives
The conference will
provide attendees with
tips on improving re-
sumes, speaking ef-
fectively in public and
managing business
communication. In ad-
dition, presenters will
give advice on managing
projects and effectively
balancing personal and
professional lives.
This seminar is open
to the public.
The cost is $50, which
includes lunch and all

The Bastrop Senior Center Quilters pre-
sented Cheryl Gartner, executive director
of the Children's Advocacy Center of Bas-
trop County, with 26 quilts and a number
of pillows and teddy bears to help com-
fort the children coming to the CAC. The
quilters also donated a cross-stitched,
hand-quilted quilt to be auctioned at the
"Cowboys and Caviar" fundraiser March
27 at Riverbend Park in Smithville, The
Senior Quilters meet every Monday at 9
a.m. at the Bastrop Senior Center. The
ladies are currently working on additional
quilts, knitting or crocheting caps for the
veteran's hospital and lap robes for the
nursing homes.
