KA hosts annual mud volleyball tournament
Mike Kennard
BUSINESS M4NAGER
Let's get muddy! Kappa Alpha
Order hosted its Second Annual Mud
Volleyball Tournament Oct. 15.
It all started Oct. 12 when a few of
the brothers got together in front of
Stella Russell Hall and built a plywood
volleyball court. Two days and two
trailer loads of dirt later, the court
was completed just in time for
the big day.
Saturday arrived, and the
mud bath began. Four teams
faced off in a messy battle.
There were several hard
fought games in the tourna-
ment. Each team perse-
vered. and by the end of
the tournament, every
one was covered in
mud. In the end there
could only be one
team that walked
away with a $100
cash prize and the
title of being "2005
Mud Volleyball
Champion."
The winning team was "Saffire,"
composed of the owners and workers of
Saffire Lounge.
Kappa Alpha Order has mud vol-
leyball T-shirts for sale for $10. To pur-
chase a shirt, contact KA President

Skipper to become new
chair of board of trustees
B.J. Bkl.lard
STAFF WRITER
Texas Wesleyan
University and its board of
trustees will embark upon a
new chapter in spring 2006,
when Anne Skipper, the cur-
rent vice chair, takes over the
leadership of the board, pend-
ing board nominations.
Skipper is slated to replace
John Maddux, the current
chairman, who will leave the
office after serving two con-
secutive terms. Skipper has
been a "chairman in training"
the past 14 years.
"1 began serving on the
board in 1991 when Dr. Jake
Schrum was the president of
the university," said Skipper.
"He wanted to get some input
from alumni, so he created a
blue ribbon committee made-
up of alumni of the universi-
ty. We met once a week for
nine weeks and really devel-
oped some philosophies
about how we thought alumni
should be included in the life
of the university. Then at the
end of that period, I was
asked to begin serving on the
board."
Since Skipper joined the
board, the executive commit-
tee has made tremendous
strides. Skipper said.
Included are voting to extend
the contract of current
President Hal Jeffcoat until
2014: approving construction
of the Wesleyan Village
apartment-style dorms; and
approving renovations of the
Hesta Stuart Christian
Education Building.
In her role as chairman,
Skipper anticipates maintain-
ing the legacy upon which
Texas was built. She readily
quotes John Wesley, the
founding father of the
Methodist Church.
"1 believe in what John
wanted to do," she

I want to do. Wesley

have anarchy.'"

Skipper is adamant that
everyone who wants an edu-
cation should receive an edu-
cation. And she believes
wholeheartedly that this can
be achieved in the heart of the
eastside of Fort Worth.
The quality of the facility
or its education should not
suffer, she said, despite the
university's urban locale.
"My education has
helped me to do a lot of
things," Skipper said. "And I
believe that the fine liberal
arts education offered by
Texas Wesleyan can serve as
a springboard for all the
things that our students want
to do with their lives."
The Executive Comm-
ittee has designated the con-
struction of a new, state-of-
the-art science facility as its
next project. As Skipper suc-
ceeds Maddux, the project
will culminate into a new,
freestanding building that is
adjacent to the current Ella
C. McFadden Science
Center. After receiving a fed-
eral grant for the project, the
Executive Committee is
awaiting completion of fund-
ing before moving forward
with construction.
Many leaders at
Wesleyan are hoping such
improvements will bring
increased enrollment at the
university, but Skipper said
they must always keep in
mind what is the optimum
enrollment for the campus.
"There is sort of a balanc-
ing act," she said. "We want
to keep who we are. We are a
small, private institution."
To focus on such goals as
increasing enrollment as the
board is assembled, smaller
committees are formed such
as advancement, budget and
finance, student life, academ-
ic affairs and building and
grounds.
Skipper currently chairs
the Student Life Committee.
"I chose that committee
because 1 like to be around
the students," she said. "If
you put it in a business sense,
the students are our cus-
tomers. So I try to stay in tune

with what the students are
interested in."
Anne is active in both the
community and church. She
sings in the chapel choir of
Arlington Heights Methodist
Church and has served on
boards of the Gladney
Foundation, Wesley Foun-
dation. United Methodist
Women and the Harris
Hospital Board of Trustees.
Anne is also a principle in the
Wildcatter Ranch, a premier
guest ranch and resort in
Graham, Texas, where her
great-grandfather, Colonel
E.S. Graham, was the city's
founder.
As Skipper anticipates
her nomination to the chair.

she vows to stay in tune with
the students and the role of
