Legal Department
JAG Corps To
Have Birthday
One of the most important and
least known branches of service—
the Judge Advocate Generals' Cor
ps—will celebrate its 178th anni
versary July 29.
The office of the Judge Advo
cate General made its appearance
in the early American Revolu
tionary times. Col William Tudor
was the first head of the legal
division of the Army.
In 1821—because of a reduction
in the Armed forces of the United
States—the office of the Judge Ad-
ocate General was abolished.
Though from time to time a Judge
Advocate was appointed for a divi
sion of the Army there was no
Judge Advocate of Judge Advocate
General until 1849. In that year
the office was again created and
Brevet Maj. John F. Lee was ap
pointed and held the position of
Judge Advocate of the Army until
1862.
From this time on the Judge
Advocate General's Department
maintained its office and increas
ed proportionately with the Army
through and after the Civil War
Spanish American War and World
War I.
Between the two world wars the
Judge Advocate General's Depart
ment grew and its scope of duties
expanded.
After World War II an act was
passed' requiring a duly qualified
lawyer to act as Law member of
all general courts martials and
more lawyers were needed in the
Army.
In 1949 the Judge Advocate Gen
eral's Corps was created. Since
the enactment of the latest Uni
form Code of Military Justice the
duties of the Corps have increased
many times over. One of the big
gest jobs created by the new mili
tary justice set up is the furnish-
THE ARMORED SENTINEL
ing of lawyers to act as trial and
defense councils and law officers.
The Judge Advocate General's
Corps has risen from one member
in 1775 none in 1821 and then
again from one member in 1849
to about 1200 members today.
The specific duty of the Corps
is tb be the legal advisor to com
manding generals of the various
Army units and to watch and safe
guard the rights of each and every
person in the military in accord
ance with the provisions of the
present law.
The A office at Fort Hood is
headed by Lt. Col. Paul J. Durbin.
Over 50 percent of the Fort Hood
Judge Advocates are veterans of
combat branches and three mem
bers of the local office including
Colonel Durbin wear the Combat
Infantry Badge.
The local office tried approxi
mately 250 general court martial
cases last year. Members of the
office also act as legal advisors
to servicemen needing such help.
Board
(Continued From Page 1)
main Board in Washington where
action is taken.
Before an establishment is plac
ed "off limits" the owner of the
place is normally invited to ap
pear before the board and state
his case.
Another function of the Board
is to work with the civilian law
enforcement officers in their ef
forts to prevent crime and illegal
practices.
In such cases where servicemen
are involved members of the
Board through the military police
will attempt to aid the civilian
police in clearing up undesirable
situations.
Anytime a civilian has a com
plaint about actions by the mili
tary off of the installation he can
present his case to the Board. The
cas'e will be investigated and if
warranted action will be taken.

634th AIB
(CC"B" PIO) Just seven
days prior to the sneak attack on
Pearl Harbor necessary admini
stration was ended giving the Na
tional Guard an additional fight
ing force the 634th Tank Des
troyer Battalion. Seven days fol
lowing Pearl Harbor the 634th was
an active battalion training for
war at Camp Claiborne La. This
battalion is now recognized as the
634th Armored Infantry Battalion.
Since that time the 634th has
run the gamut of evolution. From
its original mission as tank des
troyers they have now become an
integral part of Americans fore
most tank division the 1st Armor
ed.
Training in Louisiana in those
early day of World War II was a
far cry from the up to date mod
ernistic methods presently employ
ed at Fort Hood. Wooden replicas
were issued in lieu of rifles ar
tillery pieces and tanks were not
those which later wrought havoc
upon Hitler's forces but nothing
more than balloons inflated to
resemble the unavailable equip
ment.
In the early fall of 1942 follow
ing weeks of ardorous training
most of which took place in the
ever-taxing swamplands of Louisi
ana the 634th was pronounced
"combat ready" and on its way
to the New York Port of Embarka
tion and shipment overseas.
Joining another of the nation's
"Fighting Firsts" at the port of
embarkation the famed First In
fantry Division the 634th crossed
the Atlantic to participate in the
Allies' first bid for an all out
offensive the invasion of North
Africa.
Fighting side by side with the
634th in this epic cracking of Na^i
defenses was the present "parent"
of the battalion the 1st AD.
Months of training will make a
well qualified soldier but only 24
hours of bitter combat can turn
a qualified soldier into a season
ed veteran. .Such was the case
at Oran in November 1942.
Confronted by some of Nazi Field
Marshal Rommel's most battle
hardened desert wizened Pan
zer forces in the North African
desert the inexperienced troops
of the 634 found that in order to
survive the adaption to the ways
of a combat soldier must be done
quickly.
But with the landing of the 634th
Tank Destroyer Battalion the great
est blow to Rommel's power lad
en armored forces was unveiled.
For the first time in World War
II the Allies had in these tank
destroyers a weapon with which
to effectively halt the massive Ger
man tanks which had previously
pummelled all opposition.
For their part in stopping the
German tanks the 634th Tank Des
troyer Battalion received its first
combat award for heroic action
at Kasserine Pass.
With the Tunisian campaign end
ing in May 1943 the 634th moved
once more preparatory to invad
ing Sicily. Landing at Gela with
the First Infantry Division the
634th was instrumental in the ul
timate success of the invasion
when with their tank busting wea
pons they repulsed a huge tank-
led counter attack by Nazi forces
following the initial landings.
With Sicily falling to the Allied
jugernaut in 37 days the 634th
moved with the First Infantry Di
vision to England for further and
advanced training. With the inten-

sive training massing of thousands
of troops and huge stockpiles of
supplies the men of the 634th knew
that something big was in the mak
ing.
The answer was not long in com
ing. With words like "Operation
Over Lord" and "Omaha Beach"
ringing in their ears the men of
the 634th were combat loaded and
bound once more for a question
able destination but with an un
questionable mission invasion.
At Omaha Beach the First In
fantry Division ran into some of
the most concentrated fire inflicted
ed upon any unit in the entire
operation. In a mere two hours
the division suffered 30 percent
casualties and only after more
bitter fighting and more casualties
was a foothold established and Nor
mandy became a base for further
operations.
Following the St. Lo break
through the 634th was on hand to
aid in the decimation of the fa
mous Seigfreid Line and eventual
slow-down at the German border
city of Aachen in September 1944.
