KATHERINE JAMESON
An early morning phone call
ajsking a question opens the past
life of George Hurst which is en
twined with the lives of Danny
Shorr and Dora Dienst. George
now a successful accountant and
a respected citizen is happily
married to Mary a beautiful
Gentile girl. All of these years
George has kept his life with Dora
and Danny a secret from Mary
Now the phone call threatens the
life he and Mary have carefully
bliild from their two sons.
vHe
grew up a Jewish boy on
tfie lower East Side of New York
where Gerrity's saloon divided the
people who lived on the street.
The saloon typifying the enemy
camp to George was patronized
by the Gentiles whom George
believed were his natural enemy.
He was adopted from a
Houston Street orphanage at
the age of three by Aunt Tes-
•ie a sharp-tongued spinster
who ran an East Fourth
Street tailor shop. Aunt Tes-
sie taught George many
things that he spent later
years trying to overcome. He
could never enjoy a cup of
coffee under any circum
stance because Aunt Tessie
believed that coffee was an in
vention of the devil. Aunt Tes
sie was hostile to all who did
not share her religion there
fore her religious prejudices
was transferred to George.
Danny Shorr George's child
hood idol and Dora Dienst for
whom George has a great passion
play an important part in his
life. Dora betrays George many
times but his heart could never
resist her. Danny ruins George's
career as a law student and later
marries George's girl. George
thought he had left Danny and
Dora buried in the past until they
enter his life again by the un
expected phone call. Danny is now
a famous hotel-chain operator
with political ambitions which
depend on George's answer to
the question. Finally George
frees himself from Dora by mak
ing her admit chat it is Danny
she loved all these years.
George's real problems are with
his own people the Jews bul he
finally learns Uncle Zisha's les
son that you must do what your
heart tells you and you will Vie
accepted as an individual man
rather than a representative of a
race or religion. He overcomes
his deep convictions concerning
the Gentiles and is successful in
many ways.
