Each year about this time
people begin to take a special
interest in a certain area of
our law that of taxation. It
is often said that there are two
.certainties for all of us death
and taxes. Perhaps ad
vancements in the medical field
may someday eliminate death
but the taxes are probably here
to stay. Each person is required
to pay his just share of the
taxes.
With exceptions not relevant
to servicemen every United
States citizen or resident under
65 years of age must file a
Federal income tax return if
he had a gross income of $600
or more during the year. Gross
income includes money prop
erty or services received as
wages salary tips interest
rant royalty dividends capital
gains commissions and other
financial gains. In other words
gross income includes all in
come which is not by law ex
empt from taxation.
Of interest to military person
nel is that various allowances
are not considered as part of
gross income for tax purposes.

Taxpayers sometimes confuse
to be a part of gross income.
Most people must file their
income tax return by April 15
Military personnel returning
from Vietnam however have
an automatic extension of the
time to file. Their returns are
not due until 180 days after
they leave Vietnam. Returns
and payments should be made
to either the Internal Revenue
Service District Director for the
area of your legal residence or
if you have no legal residence
in the United States you should
file with the District Director
of Internal Revenue Baltimore
Maryland 21202.
Many taxpayers have a choice
of filing their tax returns on
Form 1040 or Form 1040A. This
is true for most taxpayers with
gross income of less than
$10000 whether the return is
for a married couple filing
jointly or a single taxpayer.
If gross income is under $5000
and Form 1040A is used the
tax may be determined by the
taxpayer from the appropriate
tax table or if the taxpayer
wishes the District Director
will determine the tax. If in
come is $5000 or more the

the terms deduction and ex
emption. Basically a deduction
is an expense which may be
subtracted from the taxpayer's
gross income. Deductions may
be itemized or a so-called stan
dard deduction may ba claimed.
Most servicemen will find that
it is better to take the standard
deduction. Under one method of
computation of the standard
deduction ten per cent of the
gross income is deducted under
another method the deduction
is figured on the basis of the
number of personnel in the tax
payer's household.
On the other hand an ex
emption is a fixed amount which
may be subtracted from gross
income without regard to actual
expense. The number of ex
emptions generally is based
upon the number of persons
dependent upon the particular
taxpayer's income for support.
Exemptions may be claimed for
the taxpayer his wife and his
he it
regard to whether deductions
are itemized.
Service in Vietnam provides
a tax advantage for all military
personnel. Warrant officers' and
enlisted men's pay for each
month or part of a month in
the combat zone is tax-
exempt. Officers are allowed to
exclude $500 per month of such
pay from their gross income.
Hospitalization as a result of
wounds disease or injury in
curred while serving in a com
bat zone causes the tax ad
vantage to be extended for the
hospitalization.
In most instances the exempt
income will not be included on
the W-2 forms which record

A variety of tax problems
may present themselves to each
taxpayer when he finally settles
down to file his return. Returns

Assistance in filing tax returns
may be obtained from the
unit tax officer.
Additionally the Legal
Assistance Officer is available

complicated matters. Most im

we file our return on time and
pay taxes due. It is best to
pay on time rather than pay

Mortar Platoon
In Training
The mortar platoon of 1st Bn.
66th Armor 2nd Armd. Div.
engaged in platoon training ex
ercises last week practicing to
shoot on the move.
"Our object was to get rounds
out as quickly as possible" said
2nd Lt. David L. Taylor who
led the platoon in the ex
ercises.
Taylor said that his platoon
was told to move out to West
Range Mortar One and practice
"hip shooting." They were to
fire 4.2 inch mortars. It was
a test to see just how quickly
the men could set up under
alert conditions.
Once the men from the pla
toon had set up they stayed
in position. The purpose of the
stable position was to allow
everyone an opportunity to
practice.
Taylor said the platoon's
army training test will be con
ducted next week during the
battalion test.
"What we are doing now"
he said "is platoon training.
We're screening the men's
operations."
