WEATHER LOG
By 2nd Lt. David C. Danielson
United States Air Force
Precipitation
We can expect the month of February to
be dry with only 1.8 inches of precipitation coming
our way. Measurable amounts will fall frequently
but mostly in the form of light rain or drizzle.
Thunderstorm activity will be nil but the
threat of a measurable snowfall of one or two
inches is present.
Temperatures
February is one of the coldest months with
an average temperature of only 49 degrees. Most
days will range from a low of 40 to a comfortable
high of 60 degrees.
Any extreme temperatures however can be
expected to fall between a low of 18 and a high
of 88 degrees. This makes the coming month only
slightly warmer than the month of January.
Winds
In February the north-northeasterly winds
of the previous month are no longer predominant.
South-southeasterly winds return to dominate the
local picture for the next ten months. The average
wind speed will be eight knots.
Flying Conditions
Cold air stratus that grounded many aircraft
in January will be less of a problem in February
however with the return of a south-southeasterly
flow this month Gulf stratus will be on an in-
crease.
This will mean a slight improvement over
last month since the warm air advection asso
ciated with Gulf stratus causes it to lift and
break sooner than cold air stratus. As a result
flying conditions will be below VFR minimums
about 13 per cent of the time.
Why?
Although an additional three quarters of an
hour of daylight will become available in February
this extra heating will be of secondary importance
to our weather scene. The big change this month
will be the result of a returned southerly flow.
It will cause warm moist Gulf air to be pumped
into the area to moderate our temperatures.
Caution is advised however since the cold
dome high in Canada will still push an occasional
cold front through the Great Plains into Texas.
These fronts are usually strong well defined and
capable of dropping temperatures rapidly and
causing freezing precipitation and snow.

Next the Sheridan demon

After searching the area
the crew released a smoke

After the firings Palmer

Putting on a tanker's
helmet he then climbed into
the driver's seat of a Sheridan
