THE ARMORED SENTINEL FORT HOOD TEXAS
June 12: Night
To Remember
For Spec. 4 John Gay
night of June 12 will always
be a night to remember. It was
a strange evening. Before he
went to bed he had saved one
man's life seven times.
Gay of Hq. & Hq. Btry. 2nd
Armd. Div. Arty was awakened
on the night of June 12. The
assistant charge of quarters
rushed over to his bed in the
battalion aid station and told
him that a man had fainted
outside and to come quickly.
"I looked at him and saw
that he hadn't just fainted"
said Gay. "He seemed to be
having some kind of violent con
vulsive seizures." It was later
discovered that the soldier had
a history of epilepsy.
"When I reached the man he
had stopped breathing. I began
to administer mouth-to-mouth
resuscitation. It was the first
time that I had ever done it."
'I had given classes in first
aid which of course included
mouth-to-mouth resuscitation
but to actually practice what you
preach is something else again."
Twice before the ambulance
arrived the soldier's breathing
faltered. Again Gay applied the
techniques he had taught and
again the soldier was revived.
Before the ambulance arrived
Gay had given mouth-to-mouth
three times and closed heart
massage.
When the ambulance did ar
rive Gay accompanied the man
to the hospital. During the ride
to the hospital the man's
breathing faltered four times
and again he was resusciated
by Gay.
"That was one of the most
harrowing rides I've ever ex
perienced. As soon as I would
revive him his breathing would
stop again."
"Complicating things at the
hospital was a lady who had
just come in before us in ad
vanced labor.
After being hospitalized for

the almost a month the man was I
later discharged from the Army.
For Gay's action he was
awarded the Army Com
a a
achievement by his company
commander Capt. E. W. Huber.
"What I did is really no more
than any medic is expected to
do. I take my job seriously
and I know that I have to be
ready for almost any kind of
emergency. I was a medic in I
Vietnam." I
For Gay the job as a medic
seemed natural. Before entering
the service he was a medical
illustrator. "What I would really
like to do is to draw anatomy
drawings for text books or I
might like to become an
anatomist."
"People around the company)
know me and they know
anything happens I am always
there."
