Check With The Airline
Active duty soldiers planning
to travel on leave in civilian
clothes at reduced air fares
under the new no uniform policy
could end up with headaches.
Although the 22 major airlines
certified by the Civil
Aeronautics Board (CAB) have
adopted this policy there are
about 180 commuter airlines
operating within the United
States that do not fall under
CAB guidelines.
Soldiers are advised to check
with the local transportation of
fice before planning standby
travel to be sure all connecting
carriers are participants in the
policy. To really be ahead of
the game it could prove simpler
to wear a uniform while travel
ing at reduced military fare.
If you can travel all the way
(within the 50 states) on CAB
participating airlines then you
need only to present your active-
duty ID card and need not wear

Desert Walk
According to Lt. Peter C.
Cole a platoon leader the
mission involved walking 50
kilometers across the desert to
set up a surveillance site short
of an enemy radar operation.
A raid on the radar installation
resulted in the capture of
valuable intelligence data as
well as knocking out an enemy
strategic intelligence gathering
source.
The raid is a new concept
for ranger operations which
have been limited generally to
long range reconnaissance
missions in the past. Cole ex
plained that the Ft. Benning
Ranger Dept. envisions an ex
panding role for ranger units
in the future such long range
raids is only one additional
mission being charged to them.
Restricted Movement
Cole said movement was-
restricted to hours of darkness
because of the vulnerability of
being seen on the desert during
daylight hours. Enemy aircraft
flew regular observation flights
over the desert during the ex
ercise. Perhaps more im
portantly movement during the
day was avoided because of the
danger of heat casualties. The
days were spent in sleeping posi
tions dug into the sides of huge
desert sand dunes.
According to Cole the biggest
problem encountered in the
desert was boredom. With the

12-13 hours daily. About the only
thing to do was sleep and that
became difficult when the tem-
prature hit 90 degrees and
above.
Hard To Adjust
It was hard to adjust to the
two critical extremes of
temperature in the desert. Cole
said the temperature dropped
from 90-plus degrees during the
day to as low as 25 degrees
at night. Ice was sometimes
found in canteens during the
early morning hours.

compounded by the necessity to
move in darkness and by the
fatigue-producing effect of walk
ing in the deep sand.
The heat and lack of water
were only two of the unique
dangers of desert. Only one ac
tual heat casualty occurred
however numerous insect bites
spiders and scorpions were
suffered. Cole explained that
these creatures would oc
casionally enter the sleeping
positions to escape the extreme
heat of the day. A medical
evacuation chopper was called
when one man suffered a snake
bite.
