EndKats Smash
Cords 34-0
HUNTSVILLE, Texas, Oct.
17. (Spl)-Sam Houston State's
Bearkats scored their first home-
coming victory in five years and
continued their hex over Lamar
State college by swamping the
Cardinals, 34-0 in a Lone Star
conference game played before
a full house here Saturday after-
noon.
After a scoreless first quarter
the Bearkats went to work in the
second, scoring twice and kick-
ing both points. Twice again
they counted in the third period
and were successful in conver-
sions. Substitutes took over and
scored a six-pointer, minus theconversion in the fourth to rack
up the triumph.
Lamar Tech made deep pene-
trations but couldn't get through
the heavy Bearkat line. The
Cardinals went to the three in
the second quarter and drove to
the four in both the third and
fourth periods.
Outstanding players offensive-
ly were Bobby Baldwin and
Freshman Willis Grayson for
Sam Houston and Sammy Car-
penter for Lamar Tech. Baldwin
picked up 157 yards in 11 car-
ries including a 65-yard touch-
down run. Grayson rolled up
108 yards in six attempts and
scored twice, once on a 68-yard
gallop and another on a 38-yard
pass play. Carpenter got 128
yards in 20 carries.Sam Houston took the open-
ing kickoff and marched to the
Redbird four where they were
held for downs. Lamar after an
exchange of punts went to the
Bearkat three before Houston
recovered a fourth down fumble
on its five. The Kats then
marthed 95 yards to score in 10
plays.
The scoring play was the Bob
Britt to Grayson pass on a
fourth down call. With the Kats
needing seven, Carpenter and
Olney Beltz dropped back into
a double safety but Britt crossed
them up by hitting Grayson with
an aerial.
Eig h t minutes later Stan
Keathley hit Dub Allee with a
six-yard pass barely on the field
of play in the end zone to cli-max a 61-yard drive. Oz Hughes
kicked both of the extra points.
The Bearkats really went to
work after the intermission. They
recovered a Lamar Tech fumble
on the 45 and scored in three
plays. Dick Gaines blasted
through center for the TD from
the 14. Mac Moore converted.
The Cardinals took the follow-
ing kickoff and went to the four
where they were held for downs.
Sam Houston promptly went all
the way in a drive that featured
Baldwin's 85-yard scamper.
Moore converted again.
In the fourth period, Britt in-
tercepted the Eugene Sharp pass
on the Sam Houston 33. After
Britt lost a yard, Grayson skirted
left end on a pitchout and went
68 yards to score.e (
