Inside Denton Schools
A message from the superintendent
Test scores up;
other goals set
The results are back from our second year of the Texas
Assessment of Academic Skills test, and I'm happy to report
that Denton students made great strides at all grade levels (see
page 6). Our scores are well above state averages, and we
have improved on each test from our first year's efforts.
As many of you know, we have just completed a major
study of our facilities needs for the next five years. This study,
combined with suggestions and comments gathered from
surveys, community meetings, and our own campus person-
nel, has directed our efforts toward some major goals:1. Relieve overcrowding
at our elementary schools.
There are currently about 44
portable classrooms at our nine
elementary schools and at
Sullivan-Keller Early Child-
hood Center. Moving the sixth
grade to our middle schools
will help, but even then it will4-Year Facilities Goals:
1. New elementary
school
2. District-wide technol-
ogy upgrade
3. New middle schoolequipment throughout the
district. There is no question
that Denton ISD is behind in
technology, and that technol-
ogy is a major community pri-
ority for our schools.
3. Build a new middle school
within the next four years.
Based on our projection of slow
but steady enrollment growth,
combined with a four-year tran-take two new elementaries and additions at
several current locations to eliminate the por-
tables. We currently have funds from our 1985
bond election to build one elementary school.
2. Upgrade technology curriculum and

6-8 at the middle schools, and 9-12 at the high
schools, we estimate that about 2,800 students
will attend middle school by 1994. A third
middle school will be necessary to serve that
number adequately.
We will need your support to reach these
goals. Please let us hear from you.
