NEW CHINESE DICTIONARY PUBLISHED
New York - Interest in all things Chinese has
continued to grow since the dramatic decision last
year by the U.S. and China to normalize relations. The
Chinese language is no exception to this. As Eastern
influence spreads to the West the needs of individuals,
business people, scholars, and other professionals for
a concise, practical dictionary, is apparent. Wiley
has answered the challenge of filling this need with
the recent publication of The Pinyin Chinese-English
Dictionary ($49.50; 976pp.).
Compiled under the direction of Editor-in-chief,
Wu Jingrong, by the Chinese-English Dictionary edi-
torial committee of the Beijing Foreign Languagues
Institute, this dictionary is the most up-to-date,
authoritative reference of its kind, anywhere. It is
the only dictionary that reflects the recent simplifi-
cation of Chinese characters undertaken by the Piang
Institute. It took eight years and the combined ef-
forts of over 50 people, both Chinese and non-Chinese,
to produce. Features of The Pinyin Chinese-English
Dictionary include:
-over 60,000 single-character and 50,000 com-
pound-character entries
-over 70,000 compound words, set phrases and ex-
amples
-entries drawn from classical Chinese words,
dialect words, proverbs, four-character idioms, and
terms from the natural and social sciences
-The pinyin Romanisation of all entries. The
use of modern Chinese and modern English as the basis
for translation.
Other features are a Chinese Phonetic Alphabet
Index and Radical Index, as well as extensive appen-
dices listing phonetic transcriptions and original
complex forms of simplified Chinese characters, conso-
nants and vowels of the Chinese phonetic alphabet, and
tables of geographic, historical and scientific data.
