. The night of tbe second of September
1CC8 was one long remembered iaEsglaiitl.
A fearful stona vascl over the country un-
roonnir Louses uprooting tree nail a ceo

wrecks of unfortunate vessels. Whilo tbu
commotion was pacing without a mighty
eoljisr lj dying at Hampton court. OUrer
Cromwell the wise sovcretgn aad victorious
soldier worn out with dUctutc and tlie death
cf his faronte child was Chtiog the last
great battle of life. ' Just as the sun was
setting on the third of September the anni-
versary of two of his mot celebrated bat-
tles England's greatest ruler passed away
with a prayer upon Ins lips and a smite
hovcria" over his wasted features. :
from weir body was embalmed and with
a pomp which aa Macaulaj tells os was
never More witnessed in England was laid
to rest la Westminster Abbey. Here for
eighteen months it remained when the
t)rofli?atc CharWIL being restored to the
throne draped his body from the tomb'
hang It upon the gibbet at Tyburn and
fastening the head upon a pike placed it
upon Westminster Halt where for twenty
years it remained exposed to the scorching
heat of summer and pitiless storms of win
ter.
Eut now the head of Cromwell has once
more found a resting place and strange to
say has become the keepsake of a lady.
After so long an exposure to wind 'and
weather it is not surprising that finally the
pure was broken and the head thrown down.
It was picked up by a common soldier and
kept by aim till inouirr was over arter
wards conveyed to a friend and finally has
come through a succession of families which
can be eavily traced into the hands of its
present possessor a daughter or Hon. Mr.
Wilkinson member of Parliament from
Buckingham and Bromley.
lly authority adds that tbe bead Is almost
entire tbe flesh black and sunken but the
features neariv nerfecL and the hair still
remaining. Even the large wart over one
of the eyes a distinctive mark of Cromwell's
face is still visible. The pike which was
thrust Into the neck may still be seen : the
iron part nearly rusted on the wooden por
tion in splinters. It is an historical fact that
Cromwell wa9 embalmed' and that no other
person thus -cared for was ever beheaded
but how curious that the head of so illustri-
ous a general so powerful a monarch should
finally pass into tho keeping of: a lady:
Since writing the above an article haa ap-
peared in the London Timet f ally confirm-
ingn." ' ' ' '
Alexander Pone the great poet and satir-
ist the friend of 8wift Gay Bolingbroke
Addison Warbnrton and Lady Montague
died at his famous residence of Twicken-
ham in 1744. We are told that when Pope
was dyisg a friend coming in jost after the
phy&icians who had spoken encouragingly
of his case had gone inquired how he did.
"I am dying sir of a hundred good symp-
toms was the characteristic reply of tbe
great wit. ' : ...
Pope's remains He beside those of his
parents to whom he was .devotedly at-
tached and Swift told only the truth when
trying to comfort him after his mother's
death he said : "You are the most dutiful
son I have ever known or heard of which
Is a felicity not happening to one iu a mil-
lion. ' - :;
The sexton in Twickenham Chnrch points'
out with a pardonable pride a P in one of
the stones in the- centre isle which marks
the last resting place of Pope and his
parents though to see their monuments the
traveler must ascend to the north gallery.
Pope's is a tablet of gray marble with a
medallion profile of the poet - and ' was
E laced here by Bishop Warburton and
ears this curious inscription referring to
his entire freedom from that fulsome flat:
tery to patrons which had been so common
previous to Pope's time: - j.

his skull is now in tho collection of a cele-

Bo good an authority as 3Ir. Vm. Ilowitt
tells us that upon some alteration ia the
church or the burial of some one; near the
same Spot Pope's ' coffin was opened to see
the state of. the remain.. The sexton i
charge was bribed with tbe present qf fifty
pounds to let the skull go from his posses-
sion for a single night but Pope's skull was
never returned another being substituted.

: The treat trial in "New York has excited
a discussion of the philosophy of kissing.
Beccher it seems of all parsons has been
most addicted to kisring. lie kissed tbe
sisters for peace's sake and for. amity ar-
oiisticc forgiveness- forgetfulness and
through emotions of true inwardness and
paroxysmal development ; but he told of his
kisses and that should kill him just as
George IV. was killed in the estimation of
the old Scotch baroness wh when being
asked if she did not want an' introduction
to his nisjesty roared out "Dom the man
who would kiss; and tell. ."Sever let mc
look upon his face."
There too was Cardinal John Duke of
Lorraine who wnen being presented to the
Dacbesa of Savoy got only her hand to kiss.
Indignant' the great 'churchman' declared
furiously "I will not be treated in this
manner. I kiss the queen my mistress and
shall I not kiss you who are only a duchess t"
Then rapidly seizing hold of tbe proud little
PortugnMV he -kissed her 'three times
souartly- in the' mouth.' We do not know
under what head this kind of a kiss ought
to be placed -according to- tne ucechcr
vocabulary but if the Portuguese princess
had been an American gtri of the true blue-
stocking type something like 'a 'slice of
tho day of -judgment" would best illustrate
the performance that followed' the enthusi
asm of tbe audacious bishop.
i And then if one is anxious to learn any
thing in-detail of runny of the famous
kisses -of history-it is only necessary to
hunt up a book printed in London in 184 2.
called1 "Famous Occasions When Kisses
Were 'Given ' bv' Famous Peonle" Thb
book tells how Voltaire was publicly kirsed
by the. young ana. beantunl Countess ue
Villars who was compelled to this salute
by the cUtqnen -in the pit who were crazy
with enthusiasm ' over the great writer. It
teas also of the kiss the royally radiant j
Georgians Duchess of Devonshire " gave
Steel the butcher for a vote for Fox and
ol bow the batcher took:' this and then
brought all Clare market at his heels to the
polls as he promised to -dp; and how Jane.
the magnificent Duchess of . Gordon re
cruited a regiment by placing a shilling be
tween her teeth" the sum invariably given
to recruits to bind the bargain and inviting
any man who wanted to join the famous
Ninety-second Highlanders the old origi
nal Black Watch to take the shilling from
between .ber "teeth with his own; of that
telling injunction ; of Daniel O'Connell
when to make his own candidates win he
cried to the Irish women : . "Let no woman
salute the man who votes against them ;" 1
of that young French marquis whom the
poisoner isrinvuners loved- and who
when be bad become tired of tbo caresses
ot a woman older' far -than he would have
cast her.ojr but for tbe kiss that was civen
in the night and brought with it a painless
death by the morning i of 'the kiss David
took irom uainsneoa s married lips eie
Uriah was set for bis last woundin the front '
of 'the' pitiless fight; of the kiss that the
good king : gave Guinevere' when ; she I
came alone to the holy place lifted her up
as sue grovelled at ms feet; and said to ber
even as be thought of all the overthrow ot
his mighty love and alt the shamelessncss
of his utter betrayal MTesT will kiss you
once ana nevermore;" oi tne kiss Ueluah
gave to Samson lying like a tawny panther
across his lap' and toying; .with the long
locks 'of the the; swart - curling' hair that
was. one day or vengeance to -shiver tbe
foundation of a temple and-crush a tribe:
of kisses guilty- and passionate and fierce
with unhory love and eotne stained as with j
blood and some made blessed with sympa-
thy aad tears; but in air the Ion? list that
all the book '-'contains there are no stories
told of inspirational kisses' or' paroxysmal
kisses or any form kr ' fashion of a kiss
riven bv man- to man or woman to woman.
For kisses like these. 'Beecber' and his pros
elytes and associates stand 1 alone and un
