In tbo active pursuit of pleasure or
gain the inestimable blessing of health
is too often forgotten until disease is
firmly seated and the fact only realized
by great bodily and mental suffering.
The liver is the vulnerable point in
most persons and the disarrangement
of tho organ involves almost the wbolo

liver disease there is enumerated such
number of slllictions and we claim
the Simmons's Liver Regulator to be a

gentleman:
Dr. Chaplin is a man ot eminent the-

one of tho most eloquent pulpit orators
we'ever heard. He possesses the love
and respect not only of his entire con-

were present and a nnmber of ealightjnad nothing to do with the unfortunate
ened Christiana and the audience lis-T reverse of our house. We had always
teoed with deep interest to one of the
most scholarly effort ever produced in
the city. The doctor ia a liberal re-
ligionist and while he does net accept
Christ . as a redeemer believe ia hi
doctrine and think the Bible should
be retained In tke public school. All
laws are subject to change he aays
except those of the Talmud which
have lasted for thousands of year and
will last for thousand jto come.. The
Talmud contain four cardinal princi-
ples; 1. RcTcrenc ia parent. S.
Charity and benevolence. 3. Peace
and the preservation of peace. 4. The
acquisition and the diffusion of knowl-
edge the greatest of bnman virtue.
These are the solid principles upon
which the Talmud rests and they are
those upon which rest the foundations
for pure society and good government.
Besides the Jewish reverence for
knowledge was supreme. The Book
taught that the teacher should be pre-
served by the son before the father
because while the latter led the son
into life the former conld lead him
into the glories of a coming existence.
The burden of the doctor's discourse
was liberal education and nothing he
claimed leads more certainly to this
than an adherence to the above doc-
trines. We shall probably notice this
effort more fully at another time es-
pecially if Doctor Brown should be in-
duced to repeat bis lecture which many
desire to listen to.
Cold Weather. We deem it per-
fectly safe to assert and in doing so
we have no fear of contradiction that
we have had the past few days a
spell of weather a regular old-fashioned
norther that has mado warm
fires favorite resorts and shawls and
overcoats and gloves and woolen socks
extremely popular. The ice and frozen
ground the sharp winds of Sunday
and Monday and the "snow the beau-
tiful snow" of Tuesday will no
doubt cause some of the children of
to-day to look back in long years to
me and to talk of the cold centen-
1 Christmas after they have lived a
g life of thrcc-ecore years and ten.
Yhere then will be the fathers and
mothers who mado the little children
of the present holiday season glad and
baruiy with presents of toys and trink-
ets' nice things and good dinners?
The? will not be here and those who
are 4ill have but a faint recollection of
the eVents of to-day and "papa" and
"mamma" so softly and lovingly said
now by the little ones will then seem
to have hsen nothing more than a
dream. The cold winds the ice and
the slow can do no less than remind
us that time cools the warmth of
youthfjl nature as frost does green
grass upon the prairies and the beauti-
ful plants that were forgotten and left
out oven night to freezs. Little chil-
dren when you look back in coming
years unon the cold snowy centennial
Christmls will you shed a tear as you
think of "papa" and "mamma" who
have passed from the world of toys and
strife to tliother beyond the skies?

Hereafter the time between this city
and St. Louis will be about forty
hours and hc trip could be made on
Eastern ruining time in less than
thirty hours.
Some of the fellows who rushed fran-
tically through the scenery of the Cap-
ital Theater Monday night when the
shooting was going on say that tho
rtfttivas is entirely "too thin" that
nothing but solid masonry in such
emergencies will do at all.
Postmaster Kinney who has been
corresponding with the postoffice de-
partment at Washington thinks the
mails will be brought and taken over
the International from the day tho
trains on this new route begin running
regularly to this city and that event
will not be postponed longer than
Monday.
The shortest curve on the Interna-
tional railroad is at the west end of
the Shoal creek bridge in this city.
The railroad company it is reported
had bargained for a portion of the
brickyard property at a stipulated
price ond located the bridge with the
expectation of getting the property;
but when they came to ask for the
deed the party owning the land re-
fused to sell unless a much larger sum
was paid which the company refused
to do and then the short curve was
decided upon.
Mr. Uoxie says that tlV completion
of the International tolAustin will
shorten the distance to SI. Louis 180
miles. This being the case the dis-
tance to St. Louis by rail is not mora
than 600 miles. At three cents a mile
for a through ticket which is quite
enough the price of a ticket from the
capital of Texas to tho great commer-
cial center of the Southwest would be
reduced to $24. a saving on previous
rates of about f 10. A little informa-
tion regarding rates time and general
accommodations to St. Louis Chicago
New York etc. would prove inter-
esting just at this time.

A Texas Lawteh Doxz ros. The
Memphis Acalanehe tells that its re-
porter went to the room of Mr. F. D.
Wilkes of Lampasas Texas and found
that gentleman reclining on Lis bed
for which attitude be apologized by
telling the following stcry. Mr: W.
stated that he was district attorney of
the Seventh Judicial District of the
Lone Star State:
He left Acstin Texas on lost Wed-
nesday for the purpose of visiting his
parents who reside in the middle por-
tion of our State.
At Texarkaaa Arkansa? on Thurs-
day morning he got out of the car to
breakfast. At the table he became in-
volved in a discusiioa with three
strangers concerning the character of
some Texas official and Mr. Wilkes
offered to back Li opinion with Lis
available funds. Ttixt proposal was
not accepted and tho liiici j?ion closed.
Later one of the strangers came to him
and in a very gentlemanly manner apol-
logised for some rude tpeech made at
breakfast and asked Wilkes to pin him-
self aud companion! in the "sleeper."
Wilkes accepted at.d chatted pleasantly
with the trio about politics the crops
etc. until Hope Station on the Cairo
and Fulton tailioad was reached. A
drink being proposed they stepped
into a 6doon near the platform and
got outside cf a toddy. Returning
to the cur the party went into the suiafl
smoking aparment closing the door.
After this Wilkes remembers noth-
ing until in a half dazed Btate he
found himself bereft of his new
friends and his money $200. Excited
and almost wild from the effects of the
drug which Wilkes supposes was ad-
ministered bira he rushed through the
car pointed out to the conductor the
three men and told bis story as clearly
a3 he could. "I can do nothing; I'm
no pence officer" replied the conduc-
tor. Passing into the "sleeper" in
front Wilkes found in Mr. Fisher of
the express company a sympathiser
who went back into the other car to
try and get back his money for him.
Tho train was searched through and
through but not one of the men who
owned to having the money could
be found. Iu their search a
locked apartment in one of the
"sleepers" was reached and to
which entrance was refused by the
conductor on the plea thct a sick lady
was inside. This appeared strange as
no one had seen any female and as tho
brakeman afterwards told Wilkes it
was all a hoax and that the "chap
with yer money" was behind the door.
Wilkes telegraphed to the sheriff at
Little Rock to meet him at the train
but it was useless as the three men all
jumped off the train and disappeared
just before reaching the depot in the
City of Roses.
Sheriff Anderson when making the
arrest of Sevier last month in Texas
had met casually this Mr. Wilkes and
yesterday indorsed for him a draft on
an Austin baDk thus enabling Mr. Wil-
kes to resume his journey. This ac-
count of his troubles is given at Mr.
Wilkes's request in order that others
may go and do not likewise.
Death by tiie Bullet. Again the
Statesman is called upon to chronicle
another killing in this community and
the dangerous wounding of anotherthe
circumstances of which are about as
follows: Quite a large audience was
present at the Capital Theater Christ-
mas night and from what we can learn
a portion of that audience was any-
thing but orderly. Finally some fire
crackers were thrown popping upon
the floor when Mark Wilson one of
the proprietors of the theater and the
saloon stepped into the crowd and ac-
cused Jim Burditt of throwing the fire-
crackers and called Policeman Allen
who was present to arrest Burditt and
take bim out of the room. Hot words
ensued and serious trouble seemed im-
minent. Just as Allen was in the act of
arresting Burditt Ben Thompson came
up and said that he would stand good
for Burditt. Some lampblack was
then thrown in Wilson's face and
some one cut at him with a knife and
gave bim a clean deep wound on the
left side of his neck. Wilson then
started for the bar in one corner at the
front of the room and picked up a
shot gun and wheeled aud fired but
Policeman Allen hit the gun and the
shot grazed Thompson's clothes enter-
ing the wall. Thompson then fired
saveral pistol shots at Wilson one tak-
ing effect in his breast another In the
bowels and a third in his arm and
Wilson expired instantly. Charles
Matthews a bar-tender then commenc-
ed firing from behind the counter
when Thompson fired upon him a ball
entering one corner of his mouth and
ranging down into his neck. A
scene of perfct uproar confusion
and screams ensued ; the room was
filled with smoke and the floor was
covered with blood and lampblack
and while one man lay dead and an-
other perhaps mortally wounded the
audience was making a hasty exit out
the front and rear of the room. Some
bnrst through a front window and
others rushed upon the stage at the
other end of the building and went
bounding through the scenery. The
whole scene beggars description and
is not calculated to give pleasant reflec-
tions for Christmas times or to impress
one with the glories of living in a civ-
ilized community with a national
State county and corporate govern-
ment pledging them protection for life
and property. Thompson gave him-
self up to the authorities and claim-
ing that he acted in self-defense
seemed to court an immediate investi-
gation. The case is ona that
cannot be passed over lightly or indif-
erently. Policeman Alien in giving
in his testimony Tuesday before the
coroner's jury testified about as above
and said that Thompson struck at
Wilson across his (Allen's) shoulder
before Wilson started to get his
un. The coroner's jury brought in a
rdict that Wilson came to his death
being shot by a pistol in the hand
Ben Thompson. Thompson was
anded back to jail. It is quite
ly an examination of the casewill
tafy place to-day and as the f nd
of deceased claim that the aHair was
premeditated on the part of a number
ot jtmblers several arrests may be
looked for. If what they say be true
certainly Thompson should not be held
responsible for the acts of ail.
There was a very deep feeling mani-
fested . over the affair yesterday and
last night and there were whispers of
the forming of a vigilance committee.
W trust however that reason and
prndeijfe will prevail and that thoae
moat ii4eretd will be content to let
the law take iu course.
