The cotton market during the past
week bs been without any decisive
character. Weak and lower in the
beginning the market improved as the
day followed each other only to re-
lapse again to-day into dullness and
lower prices (or Liverpool came easier

York and Galveston to follow. There
is nothing of an encouraging nature to
report. Lancashire spinners are work-
ing on short time Manchester fabrics
are dull and in our own country. Fall
River Providence Lowell and other
manufacturing centers continue to re-
port fall stocks and slow sale for cloth
cnleis at a decline. If th- manufac-
turing interests at home and abroad are
in such an onremunerative condition
the financial outlook abroad is still
very gloomy if not dark. Failures of
large and influential honaes follow
each Other la rapid succession nor are
the failures at all connected with any
particular trade but the leading indus-
tries show a long standing unprofitable-
ness which the hard times now lay
' bire.
The total receipts of cotton at all
the porta since September 1 to eighth
instant amount to 1183202 bales for
1878 against 931150 bales for same
period in 1877 with exports and on
shipboard during this season of 1S78
amounting to Cil.lGG bales leaving a
stock on hand of .137003 bales.

and more active competition is firm

Shipments 'all rail" to New York
take a month to get there and ten or
fifteen days more to sell so that no
calculation can be made what cotton
shipped to New Yoik will bring either
in profit or in loss and shippers have
"to go it blind."

As an item of interest we give the
gross earnings of the Internatitnal and
Great Northern Railroad for October
1878 being $141054 against fll9-
057 for October 1877: increase for
October 1878 21397. This road
earned from first of January to thirti
eth of September 1873 $208007 net
against $190009 in 1877 for same- pe-
riod. While no official reports of the
Houston and Texas Central Railroad
earnings are available except earnings
for September 1873 which were net
$107811 against $111413 for Sep-
tember 1877 .
Hides and wool continue dull and
drooping with no. change in prices.
Were it not for a protective tariff Tex-
as wool would sell at 10 to 12c for best
grades ; as it is good six months Meri-
no fleeces bring from 17 to 18c accord-
ing to conditions.
Wheat sold this week from 45 to 50c
ter bushel. Farmers ousrht to look to
their seed wheat but competition in
the milling business is also required
""-v.rrder to establish satisfactory quo-
latlOajsjaccording to quality.
Coroa4 oats are firm at "0c per
liltahol CnFlnn Mfl is in rlpmnnrl at
7 to 8c per bushel in anticipation of
shipments to be made soon. Pecans
bring. 3 to 3 l-2c per pound with
light receipts. .
In securities more activity is appa-
rent.' Treasury warrants sold at 97 1 2c
but have since declined to 00 to
SO l-2c. . Pension certificates are very
firm with 69c bid 70c asked. O. KM.
account! clerks' and attorneys' are
scarce at . 79 to 80c Nothing doing
in boads of any description; a round
lot of pensions ($10000) is held at
$1.03 flat but buyers .will not pay it.
Exchange is firmer at 1-3 discount
to par on Galveston ; 1-4 discount to
1-2 premium on. New York and St.
Louis. The premium on gold is down
to 1-8. Specie payment is virtually
accomplished and will be so absolute-
ly by the first of January 1879. A dis-
turbing element to proper resumption
arises in the silver dollar of our dad-
dies which becomes a legal tender for
any greenbacks that may be offered to
the United States Treasurer for ex-
change. According to law Secretary
Sherman can on the first of January
pay either gold or silver dollars and
from the vacillating policy of the Hon.
Secretary ana the past manipulations
ct the Treasury ring we have no
doubt that certain favorites will get
the gold whilst the plcbians will get
the dollars of the daddi. One hun-
dred dollars in silver are however
worth but $83 in gold so the recipient
of dollars will be a loser and silver
dollars must sell at a discpunt unless
the Secretary pays out no silver dol-
lars at all.
The people begin to see the folly of
the whole silver business and an ad-
ditional proof is furnished that the
laws of commerce are more powerful
than the combined wisdom (0 of a
legislature even if this legislature be
the Congress of these United States.
