Chlcnjfo; Sept. 23. ft is rumored
that Franklin D. Roosevelt. Demo
cratic candidate for Vice-President
has been dlplomatlrally called to
the carpet for his utterances In re-
ference to his connection with the
-outrages perpetrated In the Neexo
republic or Haiti. His assertion
made In early aneechen that he
know something about the povern-
tnpnt of countries south of us. that
he had bepn running a couple of lit-
tle countries himself In connection
with his duties as assistant secretary
of the navy- and had written the
constitution of Haiti seems to dis-
pense Democratic cencorship.
'Unless this statement should be
placed side by side with that made
by Candidate Cox concerniner cam-
paign contributions to the Republi-
can party It would be accepted as
the most reactionary of the irres-
ponslhle gab-rot that have .charcter-
lstod the. Democratic campaign. It
takes a cold-blooded statesman to
acknowledge responsibility for the
situation in Haiti and since the
Democratic candidate for Vice-
President can find a source of con-
gratulation for his connection with
it one Is prone to wonder whether
' he needs to submit himself to a
' mental specialist or a specialist In
consciences.
At any event it is being said that
Franklin D. has been told gently
but none the less firmly that his

interest of Mississippi Tat Harrl
son. who is reputed to be the au-
thority of breaking the news to the
candidate of course had no con-
nection with Haiti-and the outrages
committed. against the natives but
is due to many and recurring evi-
dences that the people are not en-
thusiastic over the candidate's as-
surance of securing votes In the
League of Nations by filching the
moral suasion from any little na-
tion. The assumption of the Democratic
candidate is too distinctly drawn to
serve the Democratic causes. Haiti
owes money to America bankers as
does the Negro Republic of Liberia.
It appears that the latter country
owes this country $7000000. $5-
000000 of which has been advanced
to it since the world war began.
From the singular Intimation of the
Democratic candidate we are led
to infer that this loan was placed
for the purpose of buying the votes
of Colored nations in the League
of Nations. This might hawe been
the Democratic administration's pur-
pose but whether it was or not
the Democratic candidate for Vice-
President while Assistant Secretary
of the Navy sent marines down to
Haiti to shoot down thousands of
Negro natives and goes on the
stump asking for Indorsement of
The best man was Mr. Walter
Abernathy of Chicago. The other at
tendants of Mr. Cyrus were: Capt.

ton. D. C
The marriage ceremony was per
formed by Father C. O. Brooks Rec-
tor of the St. Marks Episcopal
Church of Birmingham. The wedd-
ing march was played by Miss Alice
C. Simmons of Tuskegee who is
also a relative of the bride.
Immediately after the ceremony
the bridal party was served lunch-
eon after which they motored to
Montgomery. From this point the
birde and groom departed for Ben-
ton Harbor Mich. where the honey-
moon will- be spent. Mr. and Mrs.
Cyrus will make their home in
Chicago 111. where Mr. Cyrus is
engaged in the Undertaking busi-
ness. The first of the many pre-nuptial
functions given was a reception Giv-
en in the honor of the visitors on
Monday evening in the Tuskegee
Woman's Club room. The gentle-
men were entertained Tuesday even-
ing at a banquet given in Dorothy
Hall by the young men of the fac-
ulty. Two showers were glven in honor
o fthe bride. The first" was an
aluminum shower given by the Mes-

Taking the votes of Negroes de-
nying them the rights that belong
to them Is nothing new in the Dem
ocratic curriculum. Congressmen are
elected in the South and clectora
votes acquired by this method but
this Is the first time that the vote
of a Negro .country has been in
danger. Consequently it Is assum-
ed that Franklin D. has undertaken
the progression of disfranchisement.
First his party disfranchises the
Negro In the South and now he
proposes to disfranchise Negro re-
publics In attempt to even up voting
strength in the League of Nations.
If the United States must depend
upon such methods as these to as-
' sume a position in the Covenant it
' must be agreed among- Americans
white and black Jew and Gentile
that it is. better out of it.
However the vice-presidential
candidate's confession indicates that
the .Democratic party is running
true to form and is advancing its
. orthodox that the Negro has no
rights that a white man is bound to
respect from application to individ-
uals to disfranchisement of nations.

turesque wedding when her daugh-

came the bride of Mr. Bindley C.

wedding and the bridesmaids were
dressed in various colors. The maid
of honor Miss Margaret Washing-

wore a beautiful dress of silver
cloth draped with pink and lisle
tulle and carried a large picture hat
filled with pink rose buds. The
dresses of the other bridesmaids:
