Though it requires but two teaspoon-

derto produce better bread biscuits
cakes etc. than three teaspoon fuls of
any other it is not necessary to cau
tiou the public as do makers of the
rank common kinds to use no more
for fear of exposure and injury. The
purity of Dr. Price's powder admits of
twice the quantity or more being lived
with perfect safety and without detri

will use Dr. Price's cream baking pow

Tho presence of such an artlt as
Mrs. Lander here and there being no
theater here suitable for such perform-
ances as she proposes to give ought to
suggest the propriety of a stock com
pany being formed with a capital of
say $70000 to build a regular snug
cosy little theater with all of the
inoderu conveniences and arranged
upon the cheapest and most comforta-
ble plan and with proper acoustic prop-
erties. Wo Imvo been Informed that
an eligible lot can be had on Com-
merce street on very favorable terms
and on a long credit. That such an
enterprise would pay there can be no
doubt. Dallas is within striking dis-
tance by rail of Bt. Louis Memphis
and Galveston and should form one of
the stopping places of all troupes com-
ing by way of Bt. Louis to Gulveston
and New Orleans. The cll'ect upon the
city in a bushier point of view of
having first class troupes coming here
every week during the season would
be very beneficial and would make
Dallas one of the most attractive re-
sor's in the winter lu the state. He-
fore we can expect to be put on tho
list of any first class troupe hereafter
though a suitable theater must be pro-
vided for them otherwise managers
wl.l give us the go by. It won't pay
them in come.

As our city Increases and the popu
lation becomes larger the demands
upon it in the way of supporting and
taking cure of the destitute sick in-
crease. Tho present city hospital has
been merely improvised for the occa
sion and consists of a few box houses.
What we want is a building designed
for a hospital and arranged for the
purpose of accommodating the sick.
There are some of our physicians who
would be uhlo to make valuable sug
gestions as to how it should be con-
structed lu order to secure at the least
expense the most comfort and conve-
niences to patients nurses and physi-
cians. The present meager accommo-
dations for our sick are inadequate and
In justice to the oily physician and the
inmates should be increased. It is to
be hoped that the council will consider
the menus by which n suitaolc brick
building substantially built and pro-
vided witli water and gas a resident
surgeon's rooms a druggist office and
suitable apartments for a matron and
nurses may be secured. Withmclia
building ready for the reception of pa-
tients Bisters of Charity those noble
women who spend their lives minister-
ing to the sick might nurse in the
wards and our destitute sick as well
as those who could allord to pay for
medical attention n.ixht be cared for
Let us slop talking politics awhile and
consider how tills and other work can
best be accomplished.
Tae Theater Mr. Lauder a "Ellic
bflll."
The prospect of so sure and so great
an intellectual treat as the appearance
of Mrs. Lander promised of course
drew a crowded house last u'.glit
The presence of so distinguished an
artist was an era in .the history of the
drama here inasmuch as to her be
longs the distinction of being the pio
neer of tho list of .great artists who are
yet to follow her. 8he is the first of
them to come and as a queen of the
boards as well as Elizabeth of Eng.
land she carried everything before
ber.
It would be impossible in a mere
brief current notice of such a magnifi-
cent ellort as Mrs. Lauder made last
night to do Justice to the power and
classical beauty of ber delineation of
one of thf most remarkable and difll-
cult characters to portray truthfully
in the whole range of the drama. The
part is one requiring dramatic genius.
Mere tulent cannot grapple with its
contradictions or ride out the storms
of its passion and wIlL Mrs. Lander
has brought to the study of this part
the accuracy of the enthusiastic stu-
dent of history combiued with a love

At times Mr. Lauder forcibly remind.
ed us of Itlstorl in her powerful clear-
cut touches while giving a scene like
that of the recognition of "James of
Bcotland" as "Elizabeth" rises from
licr couch. There was genius In every
movement word look mid toiio of
that scene.
Mrs. Lander's posit Ion and rank as
one of the first of the few great Amerl
can actresses are so familiar to play-
goers and well-Informed people Unit it
w:iuld be simply idle to enumerate her
sciles of triumphs and ovations every
where or dwell upon tho appreciation
in which she is held by tho leading
dramatic critics of tho pre as well as
the gcnerul public. We can only lay
our humble tribute of appreciat ion and
admiration at her feet uud thank her
most gratefully for the very great
pleasure her grand effort gave us.
The effect und force of the play was
very greatly enhanced by the richness
and historical appropriateness of the
costumes worn by all ol the members
of the cast. We do not remember to
have seen a liner display of costumes
lu nui'.y years attendance upon then.
ters. The dresses and jewels of Mrs
Lauder as "Elizabeth" were superb in
their magnificence and copied with
marvelous fidelity from tho best per
traits of the queen extant.
Mrs. Iiimler Is most fortunate in be
lug so admirably supported in every
respect. Mr. J. H. Taylor's perform
aiice of "ltobert Karl of Essex" was a
piece of acting marked by great power
originality und scholarly fidelity to
history and was worthy of Its place lu
tho picture drawn of the thriling
scenes in the life of "vJood Queen
Bess."
Mr. Frank Lawlor as "King James
of Bcotland" was a good deal of the
Forest school robust in person and
voice athletic and muscular in person
but Tvlthttl an actor whose reputation
is established upon a basis of much
more than mediocrity or a mere leai-
ing man of a stock company.
The "Sir Francis llaeou" of Mr.
George Decks as well as the "Bur
leigh" of Mr. DcGroot were iu keeping
with the principal character. Tho re-
hiaiuder of the cast was good but as
tho main interest of the play centers
lu the leading part it is hardly neces
sary to do more than name a few
which must not militate however
against the good acting of all.
To-uight "Cicopatriii" will be given
a part in which Mrs. Lander has
achieved us much fame perhaps as in
"Elizabeth." As this will be the only
and but opportunity of seeing this
great artist there should and probably
will be an immense house.
The Bcrger Troupe.
As will be seen by advertisement iu
another column this celebrated troupe
of artists will give exhibitions at
Fields' theater on next Monday and
Tuesday evenings. We have no hesi-
tation in saying that it is the best
combination that bus ever visited Dal-
las and cordially recommend them to
the favorable consideration of our
amusement lovlug readers.
