ment would enable him legitimately to

all of our merchants did not take this
practical view of the question aud a

of eourso ran tho deposit accounts of
the banks up very materially but still
large quantities of currency had to be
expressed to pay for the crop aud no
inconsiderable amount was needed to
pay for hides which latter trade had
increased largely under the high prices
obtained thoy ruuuing up to eighteen
cents per pound during a good portion
of the seasou. This demand of sourse
controlled tbo ratesof exshanice which
early and late in tho season ruled at
one-half per cent discount and during
a good portion of November and De-
cember banks discounted eastern ex-
change against bills' lading ut three-
fourths per cent and eveu one per cent
was charged iu many instances while
Galveston and Houston sight bills were
freely ollered at oue-halfj per cent dis
count. Ouo noticeable teature. which
is yet to prove of great benefit to our
city us a cotton market was the large
proportion of the

for tho eastern manufactories and
shipped to tlieni direct while the
bulk of the romuiuder went direct to
New Vork ami Jlostou buyers. It we
presume might .be estimated that two-
thirds of tho crop coutrolled by this
point was so shipped j the remaining
one third going to Houston partly but
mainly to Gulvestou. The rates of
freight through to New York aud Bos-
tou were so low that It was found bard
to control cotton for our own sea port
which had formerly coutrolled almost
