Gkntlkmbn I see in the Evening
News of this cltv of date yesterday a
letUr purporting to be from Dallas. I
enclose the letter to you In which the
remark la made: "Walton for Attor-
ney General Is very stroug here but is
being Weakened by a rumor that he Is
actively at work to get a favorite nom-
inated for State Treasurer etc." J
write to you In perfect oaodor and am
willing that all shall know what I do
and what I say for politically I have
not now and never had auything to
conceal from my fellow-cltlaeua. All
who know aa will accord me that
merit at least.
When I have principle to advocate
I advocate them open and boldly; and
when I have friends I support them
equally a boldly and openly as I ad
vocate principles.
If my suocees before the public de-
pends oil the suppression of a princi-
ple or on my non-advocacy of It when
the declaration thereof or Its advocacy
by me will serve my country aud my
people then J shall not sucoeed;- and
If the prloe of my going Into odloe is
silence when my' friends need uy
help then I shall never be an office-
holder. 1 am not a neutral man and
do not love office well euough to fly
from piiuolpleor abandon friends to
obtain it.
The rumor of which the letter-
writer speaks is based on letters written
by Major Dorn and a select coterie of
frieuda here ' wherein they enclosed
my private telegram to George l'fu filer
of New Braunfels obtained without
my knowltdge and secretly circu
lated with Intent to Injure me; where-
as if they bad notified me that they
had the telegram and desired to use
it I would without hesitation have
given my permission stipulating only
that tbey used It opeuly and not In an
underhanded manner. Up to this day
they have never notified me that they
bad possession of or were using aald
telegram. Fair-minded candid men
may draw their own conclusions.
I have supported and will support
my personal friend In preference to
Major Dorn for Treasurer. This I
have a right to do; I accord to every
other citizen a like right I proscribe
no man because be prefers one Demo-
orat over another for office. Yielding
the right to others I claim the aame
for myself and that too without prej-
udice before a fair-minded people.
If my friendship for Mr. Zlmple-
man a man who bad no superior aa a
soldier whose fidelity to the South Is
attested by wounds through and
through bis body weakens me aa a can-
didate for Attorney General before the
people of Dallas and North Texas
theu I must hold to my friend and
meet defeat in my aspirations. I bad
rather be true to a friend than be false
to him and have In addition thereto
any offk our people can give. .
You may do with this letter as yon
may see proper. Your friend
