To llio Editor of llio Humid.
Your report in Sunday's Herald stains
that at the meeting of tho Democratic county
committee on Saturday only five of thoeiuht
precincts were- represented as follows: "o.
2 J. K. Blewott; No. 3 T. F. Nash; No. 4
W. L. Knox; No. 5 . K. Grove and Al.
Terry; No. 7 J. A. Crawford and M.D. L.
Gracey. Precincts 1 (which wa3 nearly
half the vote of the county) 0 and 8 were not
represented.
That is to say both members of the com-
jittoo woro presont from precincts No's. 6
and 7 whiloonly one each was present from
the other three. i
ino mroo mejibars last named voted
against a CMinty nominating convention and
the other four members voted in favor of it
and the mattor as stated in your report was
doforred for an expression from the members
frpm the other three precincts. j
The timo is upon us for every true Demo.
crat to prepare for a bold aggressive cam
paign from president down to local officers.
The Union is mado up of the states. Each
state is composed of its counties. If the parts
composing the wholo in cithor caso are dis
lointed cut up into individual
factions and locally engaged in
cutting osch other's throats in behalf of par-
ticular men instead of zealous union in be-
half of Democratic principles then the Dem-
ocrats of Dullas county may as well surren-
der to tho combined opposition ot Kadicals
and Weavor-Uhambers-llamman-Givens Na-
tional Labor lleforui Greenbatkers.
The right of the county committee to d-
cido this question is emphatically denied.
Thoy were not appointed to dictate the
action of the Democratic purty but sim-
ply to carry out its customs as a
convenient (though by no means essential)
medium through which ti produce concert
of action. Supposo ft majority of the Dem-
ocrats of the county want a convention have
tho individuals accidentally composing Hint
committee the right to say they shall
not have it! J(ave they tho right to dictate
to tho party on a matter involving its unity
and success'.' JIavo they right by positive
nuuon or non-acuon w pave me way in this
momentous crisis this voir of p resilient ial
hopes for tho division and defeat
of tho Democracy and the success of the fac-
tions arrived iig-iinstthem?
Com'niltoo or no committee the people
have uio right do novo and inalienab e to
moot in primary assemblages and either hold
primary elections (which i prefer) for the se-
lection o :' delegates to a county convention
or to appoint them by public meeting. U
tho committee act properly ami call the con-
vention by suggesting a time for the meet-
ing and assemblage of the convention which
is both their duty and the limit of their power
then it is tor the people to s y whether they
want a c invention or not. If thoy do no't
they will instruct their delegates to vote
against nominations. This is the plain and
just way ot settling tho matter and will givo
satisfaction to all who are Democrats from
conviction. Candidates professing to be
Democrats who oppose this simple method
of irettirg at the voice of tho party must e.v
pect to be charge 1 with tho desire of form-
ing combinations with and getting votes
from tho enemy. Who can believe other
wise in this great canvass involving tho per
petuity and purification of our constitutional
government?
Another point deserves notice for this is
no time to be tender-footed. Of the three
gentlemen reported as voting against a con-
vention ono 18 a county commissioner and
another is a justice of the peace both prob-
ably desiring ro-clcction. As a rule it is
better that such committees should be com-
posed of men neither holding nor seeking
office; but selected b cause of'thoir disinter-
ested devotion to Democratic principles.
Both gentlemen however are and ever
have been true to their faith and no asper-
sion is intended. Yet Mr. Knox bossed two
precinct meetings in the last canvass and
was a dolcgate to poth the county and state
convention. What is the matter now'? In
the caso of Mr. N6h the facts are more
serious. He is a justice of the
peace and a candidate for the
legislature called out by a card signed
bv a small number of citizens without
the slightest allusion to his political princi-
ples. This was some two months ago. The
same paper contained his answer accepting
the call and declaring himself a candidate
equally avoiding a word that would enable a
strangor to determine whether he was a
Democrat a Radical or aGreenbacker. Now
I ask the true Democracy of Dallas county
if they will allow a man occupying such
a position in other words directly
Interested to exercise n potential
power as a member of their committee in
saving they shall not have a convention to
select from their brethren in faith the men of
their choice to bear their banne- through the
mighty Impending contest of 1880? Perhaps
thev will ; but if so where is the spirit of
Jefferson and Jackson and how do tney ex-
pect thoir disciple the noble Hancock to be
elected president of the United Statos if at
the very fountain of power among the peo-
ple themselves there is discord
division and dalliance with the
the enemy self aggrandizement at the ex-
pense of devotion to duty? No! Let every
man who loves Democracy and desires it to
administer the government through Han-
cock English and a Democratic congress re-
buke selfishness and unite in one grand effort
to restore the government to its former
purity and the people to their former rights.
"Union harmony self-denial concession-
everything for the cause nothing for men.
Democracy Forever.
