The Dallas convention has put a ticket in

The platform U a sound ono and is far hot-

majority of the Democratic party. One

'dealing in generalities tho report points out
the policy to be pursued or that the Domoo-

With one or two exceptions it is much the
better platform. We are struck with aston-
ighmentat the vague generalities hinted at in
the maloritv roDortland tbeabsonce of a well
deuood policy. It is not what the people of
Texas expeoted to come irora the assemblod
wisdom of a great state such as ours.
That tho press of this state will criticise the

We expectod a platform to eminate from the
i Ute convention 8Diirklini with wisdom and
patriotic sentiment as pointed positivo and
unerring as the marinor'a needle points to the
north pole.
We are disappointed and sadly so.

It siS thore is a total of cattle in 0 I'an

i a tair to calculate that the increase this year
from the present herds will avorage not 60
per cent of the entire number. This will
.give 60000 calves: tho number that will
atop this season from tho Texas drive will be
about 80000 head and from Colorado about
20X00 head. This will loave in tho Pan

When the vot r learns the true value oi tne
ballot box as the method of securing the

there will be a change. When men learn to

the press will not labor in vain or lack for

rare spectacle in those sections where the

cannot thrive in the same atmosphere. The
influence of one or the other must predomi-

vigorous enforcement of thoso prohibitory
laws that are intondod to restrain the vicious
passions of both men and women. The re
tailing of whisky on evory corner of a city
town or village ana at every cross-roaus
throughout the land has about convinced
those who think that the law which encour-
ages this practice is a had one and ought to
be repealed. The numberless homes of shame
that brace thomselvos against the retreats of
virtue and float their signals of death and
disgrace in the. face of purity have about
fulfilled one mission aud that is a call for
their suppression. In Texas ai in other states
there are laws that protect society against
those temptations ana that would be equiva-
lent to that duty were they only enforced by
the officers of the government under the
pressure of a demand from the people them-
selves. These laws will always remain as
dead letters upon the statute books so long
as thoir violations are made decent and re-
spectable by the examples of the hight offi-
cials and most honored citizens of the coun-

Parol j tic Laws

Laws that are not enforced should be re-
pealed. Texas has upon her statute books
several laws that are violated every day and
this persistent unpunished violation of law
wsan have no other ellect than to weaken and
undermine respect and reverence for any and
all law. The element of society that is
prone to disregard law and order on general
principles is very much enoouraged to follow
its natural bent when the law of the state in
tnanv instances amounts to nothing better
than a dead-letter. Take for instance one
of the pet measure of Governor Roberts re-
garding which the Dallas convention was so
proiouodly silent the bell-punch law. Here
a law the obligation to observe and en.
ores the law forbiddincr defalcation of tax.
c ollectors and the embezzlement of public
funds and it is openly disregarded or evaded
very minute of the day in every town from
lied river to the Rio Orande. Bad
wen who notice that no punishment at-
taches to violating one law are apt to in.
r that other laws can also be violated with
t mpunity. Under the circumstances per-
haps the best thing the governor oan do
with reference to the paralytic bell-punch
law unless the requisite legislation can be
aecurod to make it infallibly effective is to
recommend its repeal. The Sunday law is
not violated as often as the bell-punch law
for the obvious reason that there is only an
opportunity to do so one day in the week.
