The liKniflcance of the visit of Mr. Thomas

our oonteinporariea north of Mason and
Dixon' line. They Bee tho possibilities) of
Mr. IIi;lie'iplan and its indefinite extension.
Mr. liughea simply took the charter granted
by the Maasachuaetti general court to a
Boaton company in the dark daya of 1870-77
that company proposing to buy cheap land
in the aouth axd settle on it MassachusetU
families out of work. The plan waa only a
paper one but Mr. liughea' company bought
with the charter the land which the lloaton
company only looked at and ia going to set-
tle it not with destitute operatives and their
families but with English farmers and their
families who bave money enouprn to im-
nrova their holdines and brine them into
nronint cultivation. These lands ia Mor
gan Scott Overton and Fentress counties
Tonnnasoo. are said to be true from malaria
and very invitine to new settlers. A fair
chance for increitinir the population and la
bor resources of tho south is afforded by
Knt'ish immigrants. These are steady and
tlioroughgoin'g.and they do not like tboaovere
climate ot tue nonuwesi. u mey once oe-
gin going into the south 8Bd buying cheap
improved lands they will probably croato
current which cannot again be arrested. It
is alrtadv the fact that in spite of the com
parativoly largo English immigration to
Canada and Australia the English emigrants
to the United Slates now number as many as
those from Ireland. In 1872 1875 and the
four ears 1870-70 England sent more men
to this countrv than Ireland. Last year
flR7'. tim were 24.000 Enclish immigrants
to 20000 Irish and tho greater part of thae
English are of tho agricultural classoa. Hut
tho itnniiirralion to the south is not exclua-
ivolv from the British isles. There is a con
siderable flow of Italiaas from Piedmont to
Sieilv. into tho southern ports such as Oal-
lattor place ia expectedto attack and punish ' veslon and Now Orleans Tensacola and Mo-
Ayoob Khan for hia late easy victory ovor the bile and Savannah. These people 'ready
lnyadora. The marcb or Kooerta' column oi
three hundred miles into tho enemy s
country with all its communications severed
partakes of a good deal more dash than usu-
ally characterizes British military operations.
It rival Oonoral Shorman's march through
Ueorgia In some respects but in calculating
possibilities there was an incomparably less
aangorous enemy to be taken into account.
Tbo worst that the Afghans can do ia known
With tolorable certainty but what tho rebels
might attempt on Sherman' track was an
unknown quantity d ue unmeiai calcula
tions of tho results of pending operations
against Ayoob Khan wear an air ot inno
cence which is ralhcr amusing it seema
to be taken for granted thut the unfortunate
Afghan Chief ia doomed to an utter defeat
but the couclusion is not positively apparent
to an unprejudiced observer at this distance.
If Russian influence ha6 anything like tho
supremacy in Afghanistan that Hritish olll-
cials have assigned it. Ayoob must be well
awaro that his foes are exceedingly an is
to get out of the country. How to lei ..f-
ghanistun go is now the problem which Briiiab
statesmanship is openly trying to solvo and
it is hardly probable that KiHsian omissaries
of which have heard so much bave allowed
their Afghan frionds to remain In Igno-
rance of auch an important fact. It does
noL therefore aoem certain at this distance
that Ayoab Khan will quietly wait to bo at-
tacked by an overwhelming force when he
knows that a failure t inflict a blow on him
would be the worst thing that can happen to
bis foes. If Ayoob declinos to fight on his
enemy's terms it is quito an Interesting ques-
tion what yon. Koberts will do noxt.

The wild fervid imagination of the west is
something of which everybody baa heard but
of which tho Deadwood Pioneer is the only
proper representative. There is probably
more fancy moro adjectives and more en-
thusiasm lying around loose in the office of
that civilizing medium than could be found
in Boston and Chicago togother. There is a
breeg'mess an aromatic freshnesa about the
editorials in that journal which remind one

New York Demoori;y.
St. I.ouls Republican.
Republican papers have been chuckling a
good deal lately over an alleged quarrel
among the Democrats of New York which
promised so these papers claimed to give
the state to Uartield. The following editorial
from the New York Tribune of the 'J8th.
showa how completely this last desperate
hope has disappeared :
"The snarling factions of the New York
Democracy bave swallowed their mutual
hatreds and grievances and have struck
hand in a common hope of spoils. The
Democratio state committee alter long hours
of wrangling agreed last night upon a com-
promise in which there is no friendly senti-
ments and which involves no principle but
the all-powerful principle of Democratic
hunger. Tammany will it is understood
withdraw its call lor a state convention and
a convention is called late in September to
which Tammany ball and Irving hall will be
admitted with equal representation. The
adjustment is a shrewd one for the Demoo-
racy even to the date or the convention
which ooatoones the Catherine until auch a
late day that all danger of a fresh quarrel
will probably have suosiood.
It will not do for Republicans to under-
estimate the strength of this coalition. It
means a long pull a strong pull and a pull
of the Democracy all together to carry the
state. While there will atill be jealousy be-
between tbe factions In tbia city and per-
haps open war on local candidates the fol-
lowers of each will exert themselves to see
which can cast the larger vote for Hancock."
Precisely so. "I he followers of each will
