The Jewish New Year's Day Rosh Has-

ponding with our first day of January comes
thti year on the sixth day of September. It
falls on the first day of the tenth month to-
cording to the Jewish calendar. Last yesr
it came on the 17th of September. All or
thodox Jews keep the festival through two
days. The "reformed and the "liberal
Jews devote but a single day to it Yom
Kippur or "day of atonemout" will fall on
15th of September. It is tho great fast day
of the Jews. However a Jew may fall back
from the faith of bis fathers two habits yet
link bim to his church ; one is the observance
of Yom Kippur and the other is to pray for
the repose of the souls of his dead parents
on the anniversary of their doath. Yom
Kippur is a very solemn fast for twenty-four
hours. The fast is complete not even water
being allowed. It begins at sunset on the
preceding day and with solemn ceremonial.
