HOTBEDS.
How Made and How Managed .'ow'a
the Time.
A hotbed Is practically nothing more
than 0 !oard edged pit lu which there
Is fermenting manure covered with
several Inches of soil. The top of the
botbed Is roofed with sashes which
usually measure ubout 3 by 0 feet each.
At night a straw or other mat Is laid
over the glass to keep Out the cold.
The space between the soil and the
glass must nowhere measure less than
about six Inches In tho start. The soil
will sink as the manure ferments.
Hotbeds ore usually inado of inch
boards. If the boards on tho back of
tho frame are twelve Inches above
ground those lu front should be sev-
eral luehes lower thus giving n slant
to the sashes.
If two or three good coatings of gas
tar are applied Lot to the Inside of tho
boards which come In contact with the
earth It will help to preserve them
from decay. Tho boards however
must be perfectly dry before coating
with tar.

the beginning of March collect under

shelter some strawy manure and let It
heat for about a week before using
turning It occasionally. Select a sunny
(southeast) exposure for tho hotbed.
The pit for the botbed may be one to
three feet deep. Good drainage Is es-
sential. It Is the practice of some gardeners
to make the bed entirely above ground.
In that case the frame should be at ev-
ery point about n foot Inside the edge
of the manure heap.
An Inch or two of course stuff Is put
at the bottom of the bed and upon this
elghti.-en Inches to three feet of horse
manure. Next comes a layer of leaf
mold and on top four or live Inches of
fine garden loam.
The manure should he trodden down
lu layers about nix Inches thick. Farm ;

COTTON TALK.
Bad Policy Fur All to ( liane "the
Same Cot too Dollar."
If we make an overproduction of cot-
ton we have only two alternatives. One
is to take a reduced price and the oth-
er Is to retire the surplus. Now If we
have to retire this surplus and hold It
at great trouble and expense which It
will bo absolutely necessary to do In
order to maintain the price then the
question naturally arises Why should
we produce It?
Many on account of their location
and position are certain to plant more
cotton so we cull upon all who can
ee their way clear to produce other
paying crops to do so and plant less
cotton as an offset. All the time how
ever wo want to encourago the In-
creasing of the yield of cotton per
acre. This Is wise so we must curtail
tho acreage proportionately to main-
tain profitable prices.
Variety la More Than a Spice.
Whenever all of us get to working for
tho same cotton dollar competition be
comes sharper while the opportunity
to make the best use of our time labor
and varied resources upon our farms
Is proportionately curtailed. No one
can utilize his time as profitably rais
ing one crop as he can when under
taking to grow a proper variety. "Va
riety Is not only the spice of life;" It
Is essential to the well balanced and
highly profitably operated farm. And
every good farmer will give every crop
that he can grow successfully and prof-
itably Its duo place In his year's pro
gramme. Southern Cultivator.

A Fine Climate.
A mild summer climate is a de-
sirable attraction to homeseekers.
Strange as it may seem northern
leople have an idea that the Texas
summer is of the hallean variety
when as a matter of fact no state
on the whole has a better summer
climate. Acute suffering from heat
which is common to northern cen-
ters of population in June July and
August is unknown to Texas.
Prostrations are very rare and fa-
talities from sunstroke are un-
known. It is true that the temper-
ature sometimes strikes the 100
mark but the cooling breezes which
sweep over the prairies neutralize
the heat and make life worth living.
Another feature of the northwest
Texas climate is that the nights are
cool and refreshing the midnight
temperature frequently reaching
below 70. The range of tempera-
ture therefore is from' 68 to 70
minimum and 90 to 100 maximum.
showing a falling of 22 to 32 de
grees. This is an atmosphere con-
taining a minimum of humidity and
makes an ideal summer climate.
Stimulation Without Irritation
In case of stomach and liver
trouble the proper treatment is to
stimulate these organs without ir-
ritating them. Orino Laxative
Fruit Syrup aids digestion and stim-
ulates the liver and bowels without
irritating these orcans like nilia nr
ordinary cathartics. It does not
nauseate or gripe and is mild and
pleasant to take. Golding Drug
