DR. jose p. tamborini
A pagnacious giant of a man
who owns the nick-name of
"Argentina's Mr. Six-By-Six
has begun the most anxious
week in hi> life.
For it will take until Satur-
day—perhaps longer — for L>r.
Jose Tamborini — to finil out
whether he has lieen electeil
president of Argentina.
8ome three-million of tlu-
Latin American republic's
qualified three and one-half
million voters went to the
polls Sunday to east their
ballots. And Tamborinis
supporters claim that the
record turnout assured their
man the victory. But the
key district in the election
the federal district of Bue-
nos Aires — won't have all
Its tallies counted until the
end of this week. Thus, both
Tamborini and his formid-
able opponent — <'ol. .luaii
IVioii — must now cap
their whirlwind campaigns
with a week of twiddling
their tumbs — waiting for
the big announcement.
Actually, they may have t
wait even longer, since the rest
of Argentina's provinces will lag
far behind that big. important
block of votes carried by the
federal district. Should the elec-
tion be close there, the thumb
twiddling would have to go on—
for another three weeks.
And—on the surface at least

ARMOR'S ItltKi
c-ian, Tamborini has been a stu
dent of law and sociology most
of his life. He was born in Buen-
os Aires 60 years ago, and wa- i
graduated from Buenos Aires ;
Universitv in 1911.
A few years later, Tamborini •
was ^ell" launched on his dual j
career as doctor and politician. ,
Working 16 hours a day,
6 days a week, he managed
to maintain a thriving medi-
cal practice and serve as the
Buenos Aires representative
in Argentina's national
chamber of deputies. And lie
continued in that post lor
thiye terms — from 191#
until 1925.
There was. a short intermis-
sion at that'time while Tambor-
ini took over the job of minist-
er of the interior for three
years. And there was a brief
period of five years or so when
Tamborini seemed to think one
job—medicine — was enough
for him.
But he was back in the cham-
ber of deputies in 1936, where
he remained until 1940. And
"Mr. Six-by-Six" jumped into
Argentina's national senate in
'40, where he lasted until the
so-called "Colonel - clique" .stag-
ed its revolution in 1!MU.
Since then. Tamborina ha-
been shaking an agitated finger
under Peron's nose at every op-
portunity. For years, he was I
leader of Argentina's radical
party when even membership in
the party meant the closest sur-
veillance by Peron's vast police j
force- i
There were other handicaps.;
In Argentina, the very title!
"radical" was a hair-raising one
to hundreds of tbou-aiid.- of Ro-
man Catholic-:.
But a painfully -low •-uinpaigti
of what Tamborini called "edu-
cation" worked wonders in the
past few years. By the end of
last December Tamborini had
won enough followers to gain
the presidential nomination by
a coalition of political parties
called the democratic union.
Under the union's anxious
eye. Tamborini set off on a jun-
ket into the wilds of Argentina
to win this most important con-
test he has ever fought. It was-
n't easy.
