Girl To Participate In Beauty
Contest Despite Church Bans
WHEELING, W. Va„ June 26
(UP)—Pretty Mary Ruth Ford,
20, said today she would partici-
pate in a local beauty contest
despite the threat of excommu-
nication from the Roman Cath-
olic church.
Her father, a grocer, backed
her up.
"It's a matter of the church
ytaving one view and the fam-
ily another," he s: > ici, referring
to the ruling of Bishop John J.
Swint that Catholics tuking part
ifi the contest next Monday will
face excommunication.
Two girls already have with-
drawn from the beauty contest
because of the bishop's stand.
Bishop Swint said the contest
was immoral and indecent.
The contest is sponsored by
Jihe Moundsville Junior Cham-
ber of Commerce as a prelimi-
nary to a state beauty pageant

The Chamber, meanwhile, ap-
pealed directly to Pope Pius XI1
to lift, the ban. Wiiiiam J. B.
Miller, Director of Public Re-
lations for the Chamber, said
he had cabled a request to the
pope for an "expression" on the
matter because it "threatens
the success" of the pageant.
Moral Background
"The moral background of
each entrant is investigated and
undesirables are not permitted
to enter. Talent is stressed; in
decent exposure is banned,"
Miller said in the cablegram.
Miller said he told the pope
that Catholic girls have won
the state "Miss West Virginia"
contest for the last two years—
in 1946 Norma Lee Salisbury, of
Parkersburg, W. Va., and in
1047 Joan Estep of Wheeling.
Miss Estep is studying music
at Duquesne University in Pitts-
burgh. a Catholic school, with
the $1000 scholarship she won
in the state contest and the
$1500 she received at Atlantic
City, Miller said.
The girls who withdrew were
Gertrude Bedway, 22, who was
graduated last week from the
New England Conservatory of
Music at Boston, and Helen
Mamula.

Delayed By New
Developments
HOUSTON, Tex., June 26 —
(UP)—Additional witnesses and
other new developments put a
hitch in Harris County Grand
Jury operations today, anil a re-
liable source predicted indict-
ments in the horserneat investi-
gations would be held up until
late next week.
Jury foreman Gus Dittmar
said it was possible the jury
sessions might be dragged out
until Friday.
"It looks like we'll have a full
day's session of testimony Mon-
day, with additional witnesses
in the horse meat inquiry, and
also a number of witnesses to
be heard in the alleged attack on
a grand jury witness," he said.
One or more sessions, after
the actual taking of testimony,
will be needed to vote the in-
dictments. Estimates were that
as many as 40 individual eases
would be covered in the indict-
ments.
Alleged violence in connection
with another key witness stir-
led interest in yesterday's ses-
sion.
V. A. Wilborn, a meat com-
pany owner, told police a "stran-
ger" threw acid on his negro
maid and then set fire to a ga-
rage apartment at the rear of
the Wilborn home Thursday.
Wilborn was asked to appear be-
fore the jury Monday.
Earlier in the jury proceed-
ings, the home of another wit
ness—I,. C. Boelcer— was de-
stroyed by fire.
The last witness before the
jury adjourned todav until Mon-
day at 9 a. m. was Thomas L.
Thomas, negro butcher, who
told officers he was fired at four
times near his home Tuesday
night. A man Thomas identi-
fied as one of his assailants was
expected to testify Monday.
