Glamor Polls Slated To
Go For Passing In 1948
NEW YORK. Sept. 27. (UP)—
Those pigskin pitchers who can
toss a strike with the inflated
oval are going to be the glamor
guys of the gridiror this fail if
the returns tallied today on the
first big weekend are any indica-
tion.
There's still plenty of
room for the human loiter-
ing Kams, the hipper-dipper
Dandies and the oilier spec-
ialists. Don't forget about
that.
Any team can use a muscular
marvel like Jackie Jensen of Cal-
ifornia big man in California's
win over Navy: Shifty Lou Kus-
serow, who raced for three in
Columbia's win over Rutgers;
George Galiaferro. who anklecl
likewise at Indiana lieat Wiscon-
sin: Sugarfoot Jim Cain, surprise
package unwrapped by Army in
trouncing Villanova: Tackle A1
Zmijewski, whoso pass intercep-
tion kept Notre Dame undefeat-
ed, or speedy Everett Faunce,

C Playoff Crown
B,V United Press
The Amarillo Gold Sox and
the Kilgore Drillers traveled to
East Texas today for what may
be the final game of their in-
terleague series for the class C
championship of Texas.
The Gold Sox need only
one jiiore victory to give
the West Texas-New Mexico
circuit its third straight class
c championship over the
oLne Star ijeaguc.
The Sox made it three in a
row yesterday with a 11-4 vic-
tory over the Drillers, bunching
most of their 11 blows into the
fifth and sixth innings, when
they punched across seven and
four runs, respectively.
The drillers got only eight hits
off Jack Schumacher, while Wil-
lis Chamness and Bruce Divers
were hit freely by slugging
Panhandle nine. T
The clubs play tne fourth
game of the best four- out- of-
seven series at Kilgore tomor-
row' night.
In two previous inter-league
matches, the Lone Star teams
have won only one game.
Bullet Bot in Minnesota's win
over Washington.
But from there you have to
give it to the guys who starred
overhead.
For instance:
Yale's Levi Jackson, who rack-
ed up two afoot but passed for
another in a 2S-13 conquest, of
Brown.
Clioo-Choo Charley Jus-
tice, North Carolina's runa-
way Express, who heaved
a couple and scored a pair
in a one-man show as the
Tar Heels turned in one of
the season's biggest upsets,
34-7, over Texas
A1 Di Maggio, Iowa aerial ace,
whose passes scored one T.D. and
set up the other to pave the way
for Ron Headington's two win-
ning extra points in a 14-12
thriller over Marquette.
Doak Walker, that man
from SMC, who pitched,
caught and ran for touch-
downs in beating Pitt, 3S-I-I.
Oregon's Norm Van Brocklin,
whose passes brought his club
from behind to a 20-12 conquest
of Stanford.
Busy Joe Ernst, whose tosses
set up two touchdowns and then
went on the receiving end to
score one as Tulane upset Ala-
bama. 21-14.
Baylor's Adrian But'k, the
sharpshooter who laid Tulsa low.
42-19.
Pitching Tom Peterson, the
guy who heaved one T.D. and
scored the other to let Michigan
slip past Michigan State, 13-7.
Of course, in most instances,
the passers had more to get
along with than just the ability
to hit a target. Triple threats can
still get an education in almost,
any section of the country.
But floating that ball to the
right place, at the right time, us-
ually makes it a lot more attrac-
tive—and doesn't raise half as
many lumps.
When Johnny Crush—what a
name for a football player—in-
jured his right arm throwing
the javelin, he spent an entire
summer learning to toss a foot-
ball left-handed. Now a fresh-
man at Rensselaer Polytechnic
Institute of Troy, N.Y.. the quar-
terback, who was outstanding
at Trenton, N.J., Catholic High,
flings the pigskin from both
sides with equal facility. Too
bad the rules restrict a team to
one football.

The chips will be down this
week for Texas Christian and
Arkansas, two undefeated teams,
as they blast the lid off the
Southwest Conference title race
in the feature game of a six-
game card.
Both the Horned Frogs and Ra-
zorbacks have been given out-
side chances at the conference
title won last year by Coach
Matty Bell's Southern Metho-
dists and next Saturday night's
game in Purple Stadium should
eliminate one of them from
that category. The Porkers will
rate a slight edge.
TCI' beat Oklahoma A. &

Arkansas took east Texas
State, 4(1-7.
It. will be the only conference
tilt on the card as the other five
teams take on outside foes, four
of them intersectional.

vance ratings with a scintil-

conference berth it seeks by
I topling Texas A. & M. 20-14 last
week. The game will be at Dal-
; las.
In the four intersectional con-
! tests, the Southwest will be fa-
l vored to win two, one will be
! practically a toss-up and the
j other will find Texas A. & M.
: an underdog against a potent
| Oklahoma crew.
Texas, despite its 34-7 shel-
lacking at North Carolina
last Saturday, will he a
heavy choice at Austin
over .Yew Mexico, which de-
feated Colorado !Mi.
Rice, 40-0 winner over weak
Sam Houston, should rate well
j above Louisiana State, which
j was idle after losing to Texas
! 33-0 a week earlier. The Owls
i and Tigers play in Houston
j Saturday night.
Oklahoma, iioseAl out 20-
17 by Santa Clara, will he
a two touchdown favorite
over the Annies at Nor-
man unless they look too
far ahead to the traditional
game against Texas in Dal-
las a week later.
Baylor, which surprised every-
one with a 42-19 triumph over
Tulsa, will be an even choice
| against Mississippi Stafc, 21-0
j winner over Tennessee, in a
I night game at Memphis, Tenn.
