The Rain.
Soma timo between midnight aud
day it began to rain heavily. It had
boon raining showers oil through tlo
night but at the timo indicated it com
menced raining sure enough. It was
not the gentio patter of tho drops on
tho roof. There was nothing poetical
about it except in the grandeur and
tho sublimity of its fall the awful
cataract of its outpour. Blackness
gives but a mere conception of the
terror of tho darkness relieved Uy tho
lightning's lurid glare now and (hen
cl.se its intensencss must have driven
one mad who happened to bo out in It.
It seemed as Byron says in his (I)ark-
ness" that "tho blind and blackened
eartli hung in tho moonless air." The
horrible pit of Avernus when a dun
pall of sulphurous smoke hides all its
jets of flume could not be blacker and
amid Ibo thunder's roll tho light-
ning's wild dance and the pour of the
rain one could imagine almost he
heard the gibes and gibberings of
ghouls and feel the clutches of their
bony fingers in his hair aud their hot
fetid breath on his checks aud then
their laughter like the echoes from
tho hollow depths of a new-
made grave. -Mow long the rain lasted
our reporter cannot say for it awaken
ed him aud ho fell asleep and was
awakened again and it was still raining.
It came down in an awful torrent
Hooding ail tlio face of tho earth mak-
ing the gutters to overflow into tho
streets as the. marks plainly showed
this morning aud washing off all light
movable things. In so far as cleansing
tho city it was just such a rain as was
needed. Tito city was not much dir-
ty but alwavs in a citv tho size of Dal-
las no matter how in itch caro may be
taken there is trash aud offal that a
good rain washes off and this ouo lias
dono that thing to perfection. Wo
expect to hear of freshets in tho
streams and washouts on the railroads.

Tlio Texas Benevolent Association
is a mutual organization relying upon
membership to contribute according
to ago and benefits and has dono more
to contribute to tho relief of widows
and o- -hans of Texas than any other
order wo know of having paid 141
death claims amounting to over $!liO-
000 and saved membership over old
line compnnies nearly two millions.
It paid more money to tho beneficia-
ries last year thau any other lifo com-
pany doing business in tho Stato. It
is well conducted and in tho hands ol
tho best men. Tho plan is plain aud
equitable. Tho conlidcnco is placed by
tlio management in tlio members who
alono pay death claims is similar to
tho Knights of Honor aud other or-
ders. It is a Texas organization con-
